Database Markets Defined • Database, DBMS, Marketing (Reading #1) • Database is a collection of data • DBMS is a computer program designed to manage a large set of structured data, and run operations on the data requested by the clients it serves. Could be a customer support system or payroll • Database marketing is a form of direct marketing using databases of customers or potential customers to generate personalized communications in order to promote a product or service for marketing purposes. • Database Markets are a $15 billion industry

Oracle • Develops their own: • CRM • DBMS • ERP • SCM • CEO Larry Ellison was once quoted by Forbes magazine as being “Richest man in the world” • Employs around 68,000 employees in 2007 • Revenue of around $17 billion in 2007 with revenue jump of 15% • Recently made purchase of BEA Systems (manufacturer of middleware software) for $8.5 billion • Currently controls 44.4% of database market share

IBM DB/2 • Develops their own: • Relational DBMS • Relies on a strong code and database • Gained first movers advantage like Oracle • Although DB2 products are offered for Unix-based systems and personal computer operating systems, IBM’s DB2 trails Oracle's database products in UNIX-based systems and Microsoft's Access in Windows systems. • Market share is equal to 21.2% a second place standing behind Oracle

  6. Microsoft SQL • Develops their own: • DBMS • CRM • Strong focus on product saturation and GUI • Totally heterogeneous database environment that will benefit any business • Around 75% of enterprises use Microsoft SQL • Was originally created by Sybase Inc (Reading #2) • Market share of 18.6%

MY SQL • Develops their own: • Open-source DBMS • Relatively small company; the underdog • Wants to be the IKEA of database market • In the process of being acquired by Sun Microsystems, an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information technology services. Sun is open source • CEO Marten Mickos believes Sun and MY SQL’s complementary product line-ups will extend MySQL's database reach • Market Share of less than 5%
