  1. Developing an Online Tool for Delivering Research Results: An Update to the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Crash Reduction Factor Database Christopher Monsere, Aaron BreakstoneRobert L. Bertini and Douglas W. BishTransportation Research BoardJanuary 23, 2007

  2. Outline • Introduction • Objectives • Methodology • Developing the database & tool • Simple case study • Discussion

  3. Introduction • Challenge in disseminating research results to the practitioner • accessible and easy to use • still provide the depth and guidance • Online tool can be easier • interactive nature • specific information displayed • content can also be continuously updated

  4. Project Objectives • Conduct evaluation of research • comprehensive set of countermeasures • expected effectiveness • references • Deliver results • traditional format • online planning and design tool • not just a “table” – include discussion

  5. Project Methodology • Assemble countermeasure catalog • review/edit/synthesize • Find studies for each countermeasure • Systematic review process • ranking of study quality • summary of studies for each countermeasure • Derive CRFs from synthesis of studies

  6. Countermeasure Catalog • Original ODOT list • 91 countermeasures (really 67) • deletions recommended: 19 • Similar efforts nationally • NCHRP 17-25, HSM Part II, Safety Analyst • Approximately 200 countermeasures identified • list reviewed and refined to 94

  7. Estimating Crash Reduction Factors • Research reviewed • limited countermeasures with quality research available • used NCHRP 17-25 for consistency • Our categories • Countermeasures with Robust Research • Countermeasures with Limited Research • Countermeasures with Discussion Only

  8. Countermeasure Categorization

  9. 42,000 ADEV • The land use: • NW: gas station with mini-mart • NE: gas station • SE: Car dealership • SW: Lawn • Western & Pacific RR

  10. Crash Type

  11. Driver Errors

  12. Crash Severity

  13. Discussion • Useful – anecdotal feedback positive • Discussion and documentation • transparency is important • Online search tool could help less experienced safety professional • As this tool continues to develop, it can be customized rather easily

  14. Acknowledgements • Zach Horowitz, David DelaHoussye, PSU • Cynthia Buswell, ODOT Region 2 • Angela Kargel, ODOT Region 2 • Anne Holder, ODOT Transportation Safety • Nick Fortey, FHWA • Beth Wemple, Kittelson and Associates, Inc. • John McGill, Synectics Trans.
