  2. The Capital • The Capital of Tirol is Innsbruck • The population of Innsbruck is about 110,000, making it the 5th largest city in Austria • It has hosted the Olympic Winter Games twice and is has a huge skiing community and numerous ski resorts • Considered one huge ski resort

  3. Population and size • Population is 712,077 according to the 2011 Census

  4. Geography • Located in the Alps and surrounded by mountains • The Inn river runs through Tyrol • Not many cities • Very mountainous terrain

  5. culture • Large Skiing community • Perchtenlauf, when groups of people run over the mountainsides in costumes to try to scare off angry winter spirits.

  6. history • Trade route made by the Romans went through Tyrol • Has bee a member of several Empires over the course of time • Became part of Austria at the end of WWII • Invaded by Germany in 1938

  7. economy • Most economy is through tourism and skiing • Mining, copper, coal

  8. Krapfenschnapper • Delicious pastry made for holidays and holy days. Often layed on graves of the dead, they are thought of as blessed and almost holy.

  9. Alban Berg • Austrian composer and violinist • Born in Vienna Feb 9th 1885 and died Dec. 24th 1935 • Had no formal instruction on composing • Devoted his entire life to music, writing the music used in Woyzeck, a German Tragedy written in 1912.
