  2. Job overview • RNs work directly with patients and their families. They are the primary point of contact between the patient and the world of health care, both at the bedside and in out-patient settings. • perform frequent patient evaluations, including monitoring and tracking vital signs, performing procedures such as IV placement, phlebotomy, and administering medications • develop the day-to-day nursing care plans both in hospital, and for care after discharge by families and visiting nurses.

  3. Why am I interested? • I’m interested in this career because I like thinking on my feet and when patients need help I could think fast to find out what they need and how to assist them through their illness I don’t believe any other career could give me that challenge or satisfaction. I have been interesting in this career as far back as I can remember it has always been a very big interest for me.

  4. What school? • Ubc Okanagan offers a 4 year program • experience an intimate, student-centred classroom environment that focuses on giving you excellent nursing skills. • Costs $5,271

  5. Salary/future outlook • Starting out wage is average 50,000. • Potential top salary is 75,000 • Employment of RNs is expected to grow much faster than the average and, because the occupation is very large, 581,500 new jobs will result, among the largest number of new jobs for any occupation.

  6. Working conditions • close contact with individuals who have infectious diseases and with toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardous compounds, solutions, and medications. • other dangers, such as those posed by radiation, accidental needle sticks, chemicals used to sterilize instruments, and anaesthetics. • RNs also may suffer emotional strain from caring for patients suffering unrelieved intense pain, close personal contact with patients’ families, the need to make critical decisions, and ethical dilemmas and concerns.
