  2. Probability • The branch of mathematics that involves chance or random outcomes • Always between 0 and 1 • Probability of 0 means it won’t happen and 1 means it will happen for shore • The Law of Large Numbers The more we repeat a chance process, the close the proportion of an outcome will reach the true probability • Sample Space A list of all possible outcomes

  3. Probability Rules • P(A)= ##ofoutcomesofA/total#ofoutcomes • Any probability is a # between and including 0 and 1 • The sum of the probabilities is always 1 • The probability that an event does not occur is 1-P(occurs) and is called “not A” or complement of A • If 2 events are mutually exclusive or disjoint, the probability that one or the other occurs is the sum of their probabilities P(A or B)=P(A)+P(B) • General Addition Rule: P(A or B)=P(A)+P(B)- P(AandB)? • If A&B are independent if the P(AandB)=P(A) P(B) • The General Multiplication Rule P(AandB)=P(A) P(B|A) P(B|A)= P(AandB) P(A)

  4. Vocabulary Experiment: An experiment is a situation involving chance or probability that leads to results called outcomes. Outcome: An outcome is the result of a single trial of an experiment. Event: An event is one or more outcomes of an experiment. Probability: The measure of how likely an event is.

  5. Union and Intersection • Intersection A B “A and B” when two events are both happening ex. Event A= Ace Event B= A B=Ace Ace • Union A B “A or B” Ether in A or in B or both ex. A B= all aces and all hearts

  6. Independent Events Two events are independent of knowing one does not change the probability of the other Conditional ProbabilityThe probability that an even A occurs given that even B occurs P(A|B)=“probability of A given B
