  1. Question 3; what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? • 20th Century Fox- Fox is a large motion pictures company founded in 1904 by a man named William Fox. Fox is famous for the production of many large films, such as Avatar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and X-Men: First Class. They are also famous for the production of many large television programmes, such as The Simpsons, Family Guy and How I Met Your Mother. “Institution refers to an organisation or establishment devoted to the promotion of a cause or programme” • Sony-Sony Pictures Entertainment operates motion pictures productions, distribution, television production, television networks and digital contents. Some of Sony Pictures franchises are, Men in Black, Spider Man and Resident Evil.

  2. Question 3: Continued. • Warner Bro’s- Warner Bro’s company is an American producer of film, television, and music entertainment. Warner Bro’s was founded in 1993 by Albert Warner, Harry Warner, Sam Warner, and Jack Warner whom were all brothers. Warner Bro’s is most famous for the creation of many big time blockbusters around the world. Such as all of the Harry Potter films which was also co-produced by Heyday Films, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception and I Am Legend. Warner is also a record studio and produces music, video and artwork. Some people signed to Warner are, Cher, Green Day and Michael Buble’. The Weinstein Company – The Weinstein Companyis a multimedia production company. The Weinstein Company also founded Dimension Films which has released franchises such as Scream, Scary Movie and Spy Kids. When planning our movie we researched production and distribution companies which founded and franchised thriller movies similar to ours. We found that The Weinstein Company/Dimension have founded movies such as the Scream movies which are similar to our final thriller opening. Instead of using a production company that already exists we decided to create our own production company inspired by our director Manjot and named the production company Manjot Films, which is an independent film company aiming at a mainstream audience and is not part of a large conglomerate. Manjot films does have a pedigree in this particular genre as this production company specialises in stereotypical thriller movies which aim to build suspense and fear by keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. Our production company is also similar to The Weinstein Company, which also specialises in mainstream/stereotypical thriller movies, which is ideal and would be suitable when producing and distributing our thriller opening.

  3. Question 4: who would be the audience for your media product? Thrillers are a genre of, film, and television programming that use suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. The thriller genre mostly appeals to a wider audience, due to the fact that there are many different sub genres within the thriller genre, such as crime-thriller, action-thriller, science- fiction thriller and psychological thrillers. The primary audience for thriller genres is predominantly males aged 15-30 years old, purely because of the aggressive nature and action packed violence which take within the thriller genre. The primary audience for our thriller opening is predominantly females aged 12-24 years of age and also relates to any ethnicity and social class. Our primary thriller opening is aimed at young girls because most teenage girls that watch our thriller may experience the same situations, such as having sleepovers with their best friends and doing fun things, therefore can relate to the thriller and its conventions, such as the protagonist being a young girl. However, there is also a secondary audience for our thriller opening. Our secondary audience is aimed at teenage boys around the same age (15-21 years) because they may enjoy the suspense and the story line of the opening. Some boys that watch our thriller may enjoy it more because there are girls playing protagonist and may like the idea of the women playing the ‘damsel in distress’. Our tertiary audience may be families as our thriller sequence is based in a domestic setting and it could offer escapism to the audience.

  4. QUESTION 5; HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADRESS YOUR AUDIENCE? Throughout our thriller opening there were many different conventions which enabled us to create and establish genre. At the beginning of our opening we ensured we planned and filmed exactly where our establishing shot will be taking place. When planning our opening we came up with many different settings in which we could use as an establishing shot, such as a prop or location within the house, a different setting away from the house, for example an image of the antagonist outside the house or at another creepy, dark area. In the end the group members and myself decided that the establishing shot was going to be filmed outside Saima’s house and we was going to use a still shot of her house at night time to give it a thriller aspect and to build suspense within the audience. We decided to film the establishing shot and the whole thriller opening at night time because we believed it would have more of an effect on the audience and seem more like thriller because we used some thriller conventions. When filming our thriller opening we did not use any diagetic or non-diagetic music at first as we believed the parts of dialogue and the rest of the silence would have more of an effect on the audience, we gathered this from recent thriller movies the group members and myself had watched previously and thought it would be a good idea to apply this to our opening. However, whilst looking back at our thriller a number of times during editing myself and two other group members suggested the idea of adding a very subtle sound effect, such as wind blowing quietly on the first thirty seconds of our opening, which acted as a sound bridge from the establishing shot to our first scene. Within thriller movies there tends to be a lot of high angle and low angle shots being used. Low angle shots are used to make a character look superior to the audience and like they are powerful within the film. The group members and myself thought a lot about what we wanted our storyline to be and what type of thriller we wanted to plan around. After a long time deciding and planning what we should do, we realised the majority of the group members were girls and instead of planning a typical thriller movie with a lot of action and fear in that we should create something unexpected, for example at the beginning of our thriller the scene focuses on us three cast members having a girly chat, and suddenly one of the girls disappear with a sign of the stalker and kidnapper. However, we did watch Scream before hand and picked up various ideas from there.

  5. QUESTION 5; CONTINUED. • When it came to deciding our characters roles we had already planned the storyline, therefore it was easy to decide who was who and who was going to be staring in the thriller sequence. As we was filming in Saima's house we decided that it would be a good idea if she was the main character and the girl who went missing, as we was in her house and she would feel more comfortable to play this role, she had previously studied GCSE Drama which was also another reason for her to play the main character as she had more experience in acting and could benefit our thriller opening a lot. Myself and the group members later decided that myself and Amani would play the other two friends who go looking for Saima after the goes missing. As we was playing best friends we had to make sure that the audience understood this as was able to read our relationship properly, therefore we made sure we acted like best friends by saying "we should book a holiday for next year" and had a close bond with other, this was also represented when myself and Amani said "omg same!" at the same time. • As we wanted our thriller to be filmed in the night time we had to make sure we found a location which wouldn't really be affected by the natural light. As we was filming inside we could easily close the curtains and turn off the lights which made it look dark and also meant we didn't necessarily need it to be dark when we filmed. We also chose this particular setting because we believed it would be a good scene to film the girly chats and the kidnapping, as it made more sense with our storyline rather than filming in a park or school. • Our group received positive and negative feedback from our audience. The audience all agreed we had a very good establishing shot which was a good start to our opening. The audience also said we had good close ups of each character during our title sequenced but believed we should have used more of a variety of shots throughout the extract. "Good thriller conventions and good locations" were mentioned by our audience and they also enjoyed the glass scene on the floor and said that was created well. However, we received some negative feedback from the audience saying that the phone with the picture of us three on the dressing table 'appeared out of nowhere", although the phone was Saima's and was meant to represent all of the three best friends to show how close they were in which the audience misunderstood, however we did take the feedback on board. On the other hand, the audience’s feedback said our editing was good and the continuity made sense and allowed the scenes to make sense and flow better. Members of the audience agreed we should have had a slow fade on the music at the beginning of the first scene as it would have had more of a thriller affect and promoted suspense. The title and credit sequences were good and well created was positive feedback we received but the audience did say we could have added more detail. All of the advice and feedback we received we took on board and tried to change to improve our thriller opening.
