  1. Oceanographical researches and Data management on Far East of Russia Dmitry D. Kaplunenko, V.I. Ilyichev Pacific Oceanological Institute, Vladivostok, Russia e-mail: dimkap@poi.dvo.ru

  2. Introduction • Description of organizations maintaining oceanographic databases on the Far East. • Current state of data distribution and management • Technology of merging datasets of GOOS(NEAR-GOOS) and ARGO using the Virtual Database (VDB-technology) • The sample of merging datasets for the Japan Sea basin • Future plans and applications for obtained data products

  3. Current scientific activity Oceanographic researches at the Far East now is making by: Pacific Oceanological Institute: http://www.poi.dvo.ru/ Far Eastern Regional Hydrometeorological Research Institute: http://rus.ferhri.ru/ TINRO-Centre: http://www.tinro.ru/ Institute of Marine Biology FEB RAS: http://imb.febras.ru Institute of Marine Geology FEB RAS: http://imgg.febras.ru Institute of Marine Technology Problems FEB RAS: http://www.febras.ru/~imtp/ • Scientific Fleet (FEB RAS): • Department of Marine Research Fleet: http://www.unif.febras.ru • 8 vessels with unlimited range of cruise • 5 vessels with the limited range of cruise • 7 Coastal ships support research in a coastal area • The TINRO-Centre and Far Eastern Regional Hydrometeorological Research Institute have their own fleets

  4. Major Russian Monitoring Programs in the PICES Area • TINRO Far-Eastern Seas fisheries monitoring • SakhNIRO Sakhalin Area monitoring • POI Coastal Monitoring along Primorye (2003-) • POI Peter the Great Bay Monitoring (2005-) • POI/IMB Amur River area program (2005-)

  5. Repeated Hydrographic Sections TINRO • TINRO-Center – CTD • SakhNIRO – CTD and moorings • POI JES – CTD, chemistry, biol. POI March October SakhNIRO Joint POI/SNU cruises (CREAMS/PICES)

  6. Satellite receiving centers - Far Eastern Regional Receiving Center, (Hydromet), Khabarovsk • Inter-institute SatelliteMonitoring Center(Academy), Vladivostok • SakhNIRO,(Fisheries), Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Khabarovsk Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Vladivostok Images from NOAA AVHRR, GMS, SeaWIFS, FY and products http://satellite.dvo.ru

  7. Administration • Russian National Working Group on GOOS confirmed that participation of Russian in NEAR-GOOSis of high priority. • GOOS related activity has been developing under the national program “Integrated System of Information on the World Ocean” (ESIMO), http://rus.ferhri.ru/~esimo/ • Far Eastern segment/module of ESIMO is under development at FERHRI

  8. Real-time Data Base maintained by FERHRI http://rus.ferhri.ru/~esimo/Projects/Neargoos/ • data from some coastal stations since 1998data from research vessels and ships of opportunity

  9. Current situation of Institutions/Organizations 1. Far Eastern Regional Hydrometeorological Research Institute (FERHRI) For the period from 1959 till the present time, the Institute has carried out about 600 cruises aboard the large-capacity research vessels. It has been done up to 130 000 hydrological stations in various parts of the World Ocean. Main Data/Metadata Bases related to NOWPAP maintained by RODC of FERHRI (http://rus.ferhri.ru/; http://rus.hydromet.com/~argo; http://rus.ferhri.ru/~esimo/Projects/Neargoos/Neargoos_FERHRI.htm)

  10. Delayed Mode Data Base maintained by POI FEB RAS http://www.pacificinfo.ru • More data provided by POI, TINRO and SakhNIRO (as a metadata, so far) • Prepared and sent SST data for all available cruises to RDMBD for under request of NGSST project • Developing GIS technologies for DB management (www.gis.poi.dvo.ru/)

  11. POI DMDB resources development • Providing access to the gridded dataset • based on the GIS-technology • - This option assumes using internal POI • database

  12. V.I.Il’ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute Main Oceanology Department  Ocean Acoustics Department  Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Physics  Biochemical Technologies Department  Ocean Geochemistry and Ecology Department  Department of Instrumentation for Ocean Studies  Geology and Geophysics Department  Information Technologies Department  Department of Satellite Oceanology • Facts • Staff: 600 people, 450 of them work at scientific laboratories, including 250 scientific workers. At the Institute there are 30 scientists with the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences and 118 PhD degree.

  13. Marine Experimental Stations of POI MES on Popov Island Victor A. Akulichev, Dr., Acad., Director, V.I.Ili'chev Pacific Oceanological Institute MES on the Shults Cape

  14. Short-term variation of water temperature along Primorye CoastPOI and TINRO moorings data 2003: Abrupt short-term variations the same magnitude as seasonal ones - of 5-10 C Vladivostok Nakhodka • Major impact on : • Fishery and aquaculture • (sea-urchin, laminaria, shell-fishes) • Biodiversity • Recreation and health etc. 30.08 18.10

  15. Current situation of Institutions/Organizations 2. V.I. Il'ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI FEB RAS) For the period of 30 years the Institute has carried out more than 140 oceanographic cruises aboard the large capacity research vessels, and about 260 near-shore expeditions by the vessels of the FEB RAS and of other departments. Oceanographic data bases held by the POI (http://www.pacificinfo.ru; http://www.pacificinfo.ru/near-goos)

  16. Development of oceanographic data assimilation technology for making comprehensive dataset of Japan Sea historical observations. • Making quick selection of data sample from different databases/archives distributed worldwide have been a reason of using VDB-technology in the developing of comprehensive dataset.
