A new public health system • Public Health England – a national public health service • A return of public health leadership to Local Government • Professional leadership nationally and locally • Dedicated resources for public health at national and local levels • Focus on outcomes and evidence based practice supported by a strong information & intelligence system • Maintaining a strong relationship with the NHS, social care and civil society • Set out in the Health and Social Care Bill

A new public health service- Public Health England • New public health service directly accountable to the Secretary of State for Health with a clear mission to; • Achieve measurable improvements in public health outcomes; and • Provide effective protection from public health threats • It will do this by; • Protecting people from infectious disease and biological, chemical and radiological threats; • Helping people and families to be able to take care of their own health and wellbeing; and • Inspiring challenging and commissioning partners from all sectors.

Physicalactivity – related indicators? • Domain 2: tackling the wider determinants of health • Reference: D2.21 • Outcome Indicator: Cycling participation • Rationale/Description: Measures the percentage of the population cycling by frequency (no of days) during the previous 4 weeks (good proxy for physical activity participation?) • Data Source: Sport England’s Active People Survey • Domain 3: health Improvement • Reference: D3.5 • Outcome Indicator: Percentage of adults meeting the recommended guidelines on physical activity (5 x 30 min per week) • Rationale/Description: Physical inactivity costs the NHS approximately £1.8bn per annum and WHO reports that it is one of the 10 leading causes of death in developed countries • Data Source: Sport England’s Active People Survey

Listening exercise • We’ve set how we think the health and social care system needs to be modernised, but we recognise that there are some questions and concerns about what we’re doing, and about the mechanics of putting these principles into practice; • So now we’ve got a natural break in the Health and Social Care Bill, we’re taking this time to pause, listen, reflect on, and improve the NHS modernisation plans; • We’ve created the NHS Future Forum - a group of 40 patient representatives, doctors, nurses and other health professionals - who will listen and then share their conclusions with Government.
