History • It Was first discovered by a British Doctor and was called “Defect of Moral Control” 1902 • Symptoms now associated with ADHD were documented and given a diagnosis of "Post-Encephalitic Behavior Disorder” 1922 • Ritalin was the first stimulant medication used for hyperactive children 1956 By the 1960’s Stimulant medication became more widely used.  The main symptom would have been hyperactivity and this is the only symptom that was usually treated.  The name "Minimal Brain Dysfunction" was used in the early 1960s and was changed in the late 60s to "Hyperactivity Disorder of Childhood."

In 1980 The name was changed to ADD, and at the time ADHD and ADD were separate Diagnosis The APA renamed the disorder Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and noted it was a medical diagnosis that could cause behavioral problems.   They noted these behavioral problems to be different than those caused by emotional turmoil, such as divorce or moving to a new area By 1987 By 1996 The second medication, Adderall was approved by the FDA for treatment of ADHD. Several additional medications, such as Concerta, Focalin and Strattera have been approved for the treatment of ADHD. 1999-Present

  4. Causes of ADHD ~Although the exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but is constantly being studied some researchers believe it is due to many factors Some of the unknown causes such as food/ dieting, poor parenting, playing videogames and watching television and hormones.

  7. Conclusion ADHD has affected people of all ages, from early childhood, to adolescents as well as adults. Many tests and experiments are done today to find ways to help them, but nothing has been found to be completely treatable.
