The birdfeelsgoodand was feeding in oneofthe last preservedgrasslandof Grenoble. As wemanaged a birdwelfarecenter I hopewe'll not needtohave a closerlooktothebird. I'm also veryinterestedbythetripofyourstorkbecauseI'mresponsibleforthemonitoringof a migrationsite (everyweek end in septandoct), 30 km southof Grenoble (col du Fau). Foryears I was wonderingaboutthepathfollowedbygermanandswissbirdsacrossthe Alps. Nowat least andat last, we'vegottheanswerforonegermanwhitestork. Thanksforyourwork. Best regards. Laurent. 6th November - thebirdseems ok andhas a "normal" behaviorfor a whitestork. Correspondence 12 November 2013 DearLaurent, manythanksforthepicturesandthenewinfo. White Storks are not amongthe (few) birdgroupswhereadults "show" the juveniles wheretogo. Normallythe juveniles leavetheareabeforetheadultsandexperimentswithlatereleasesofyoungstorkshaveshownthattheyarewellableto find theirwayifdefinitelyno adult isaroundanymore. Almost all taggedbirdslefttheareaaroundmid August, there must havebeenflocksanditispossible, that a fewadultsjoinedthisflock (thereisalways a strong socialcomponent in White Stork migrationdecisions, obviously) - but not necessarily. Kakausimplystayed in theareaandsincewehavealwayssomebirdsaroundherethat do not migrateitdefinitely was not leftbehindalone. We do not knowthereasonwhyKakaustayed so long in theareaandstartedtomigrate so late. Withintheprojectwehave a large sample sizeofeasternmigrantsandalmost all ofthem pass over Israel. The dividingzonebetweenthe SW andthe SE migrantsissomewhere in eastern Bavaria andgoesnorthroughlyalong Elbe. Almost all birds in central Europe eastofthiszonehaveto pass Israel andthisformsreallyamazingaggregations, ofcourse. All thebest Wolfgang MPIO - Radolfzell
