You shouldn’t throw it away • Electronic waste is hazardous to human health and the environment. “e” waste contains dangerous chemicals and heavy metals that will leach into the water table and pollute the ground water. • Recycling ewaste can be very lucrative, and is perfect for small to medium size business ventures

  3. “e”waste – any and all types of electronic waste that can no longer be used. • Televisions • Monitors • Computers • Fax machines • Printers • Copiers • Telephone systems • Cell phones • Flat screen monitors • Plasma displays • Scanners • CD rom players • DVD players • Hard drives • Slot machines • Toasters • Toaster ovens • Microwave ovens • Blenders • Battery chargers • Vacuum cleaners • Electric Shavers • Hair dryers

  4. Growing 3 times as fast as the solid waste stream 3 million tons discarded in the US in 2003 Over 10 million tons in 2007 3% of this is recycled The U.S EPA states that “e” waste is the fastest growing segment of the municipal waste stream

Many states have implemented a landfill ban • 2001 California passed the first ban on electronic waste • 2003 Maine, Minnesota, Massachusetts followed suit • 2005 13 other states had initiated a landfill ban policy • 2007 23 states have some type of legislation in house to ban hazardous electronics from landfills. PA and the DEP
