  3. Haggai: The Man • His name meant “Festival” • Nothing is known of his home, family, or occupation – Some have concluded he was one of the 50,000 Jews who returned under Zerubbabel Ezra 2:1-67 – All that is recorded about him is Ezra 5:1-2, Ezra 6:14, and this book that bears his name

  4. Approx. Timeline Of Events Relative To Haggai’s Story: 606 B.C. First captives taken to Babylon (Dan. 1) - prophesied to last 70 yrs. (Jer. 25:11-12) 586 B.C. Fall of Jerusalem to Nebuchadnezzar 562 B.C. Death of Nebuchadnezzar; Babylon begins decline 549 B.C. Cyrus unites Medes & Persians into 1 empire 539 B.C. Cyrus seizes control of Babylon – releases all captives back to their native homelands 538 B.C. Cyrus issues edict for Jews to return to Jerusalem

  5. Approx. Timeline Of Events Relative To Haggai’s Story: 536 B.C. 1st return to Jerusalem – led by Zerubbabel. Primary mission: Rebuildthetemple. Altar built and foundation laid (Ezra 3:8-13). Remnant Jews face opposition from land inhabitants and become discouraged. Temple work stops for 16 yrs. 522 B.C. Darius I (Hystaspes) begins rule; shows favor to Jews 520 B.C. Haggai (& Zechariah) sent to prophesy…temple work begins again (Ezra 4:24),and is completed just 4 years later (Ezra 6:15)

  6. Haggai: The Man • God needed a servant who could take His message, convey it succinctly, & get results • Haggai was such a servant! • The problem among God’s people was no longer idolatry…it was indifference(apathy) (easy application for us today??) • This was what the prophet was sent to address

  7. Haggai: His Message • Not the most eloquent among the prophets… nor the greatest use of oratory • His work also doesn’t use poetic expressions or fiery condemnations (Isaiah, Nahum, Amos) • It was plain, simple, direct (to the point) – Most obvious feature… “thus saith the Lord” (or some variant) used 26 times in this short book’s 2 chapters, 38 verses

  8. Haggai: An Outline • Best seen as a series of 4 Divine messages: – Message 1 REBUKE(1:1-15) – Message 2 CONSOLATION(2:1-9) – Message 3 GUARANTEE(2:10-19) – Message 4 SALVATION(2:20-23) * Messianic

  9. REBUKE (Hag 1:1-15) • The remnant’s problem vv. 1-4 • The prophet’s preaching vv. 5-11 • The desired product vv. 12-15

  10. REBUKE (Hag 1:1-15) • The remnant’s problem vv. 1-4 – The people had concluded now wasn’t the right time to re-build vv. 1-2 cp. Ezra 3:8-10 – But they did conclude it was the right time to focus on their own homes, pursuits vv. 3-4 – This was nothing more than selfishness and indifference to God’s work

  11. REBUKE (Hag 1:1-15) • The prophet’s preaching vv. 5-11 – “Consider your ways!!” vv. 5, 7(Think) – Good times had been promised Jer 31:10-12 – But things weren’t just not good…they were terrible vv. 6, 9a, 10-11 – Why? God was thwarting their efforts at their own success because they were neglecting their duties to Him vv. 8, 9b

  12. REBUKE (Hag 1:1-15) • The desired product vv. 12-15 – The leaders & remnant Jews “obeyed” what God had said through Haggai, and they “showed reverence” for the Lord v. 12 – Haggai reminded them the Lord was with them in this work v. 13 – Haggai’s preaching “stirred” the remnant to get busy doing God’s work v. 14

  13. REBUKE (Hag 1:1-15) • The desired product vv. 12-15 – All this happened within 1month (23 days) of Haggai starting to prophesy vv. 15, 1 – POINT what was dormant, neglected for 16 years was corrected within 1 month!! – Illustrates the effectiveness of preaching that is filled with a “thus saith the Lord” & heeded by those who obey & show reverence to God

  14. Haggai: An Outline • Best seen as a series of 4 Divine messages: – Message 1 REBUKE(1:1-15) – Message 2 CONSOLATION(2:1-9) – Message 3 GUARANTEE(2:10-19) – Message 4 SALVATION(2:20-23) * Messianic
