  1. EPSRC Mock PanelImpact vs National Importance Session

  2. Introduction • EPSRC introduced the two page attachment now known as the Pathways to Impact in April 2009 • National Importance was added as an assessment criteria in November 2011. • This presentation provides further information on the role of National Importance, what funding is available for Impact and the relationship between them

  3. National Importance

  4. What is the definition of National Importance? • National importance is the extent to which, over the long term, the research proposed: • contributes to, or helps maintain the health of other research disciplines, contributes to addressing key UK societal challenges, contributes to current or future UK economic success and/or enables future development of key emerging industry(s) • meets national strategic needs by establishing or maintaining a unique world leading research activity (including areas of niche capability) • fits with and complements other UK research already funded in the area  or related areas, including the relationship to the EPSRC portfolio and our stated strategy set out in “Our Portfolio.”

  5. National Importance • The ‘National Importance’ criterion is used to help answer the question ‘Why is this project worth funding?’ in terms of its broad potential to contribute in the long-run to: • health of other research disciplines • key UK societal challenges • UK economic success and/or emerging industry • establishing or maintaining a world-leading research activity • complements other UK research in the area, in particular that funded by EPSRC

  6. Impact

  7. ROYAL CHARTER - 2003 • The objects for which the Council is established and incorporated are: • to promote and support, by any means, high-quality basic, strategic and applied research and related post-graduate training in engineering and the physical sciences; • to advance knowledge and technology (including the promotion and support of the exploitation of research outcomes), and provide trained scientists and engineers, which meet the needs of users and beneficiaries thereby contributing to the economic competitiveness of Our United Kingdom and the quality of life; • in relation to the activities as engaged in by the Council under (i) and (ii) above and in such manner as the Council may see fit: • to generate public awareness; • to communicate research outcomes; • to encourage public engagement and dialogue; • to disseminate knowledge; and • to provide advice.

  8. Delivering Impact • New Impact is the demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy. Impact embraces all the extremely diverse ways in which research-related knowledge and skills benefit individual, organisations and nations by: • fostering global economic performance, and specifically the economic competitiveness of the United Kingdom; • increasing the effectiveness of public services and policy; • enhancing quality of life, health and creative output. • BUT REMEMBER – MOST IMPACT IS NOT USUALLY DELIVERED BY ACADEMICS • To accelerate impact, potential uses or influences of research need to be considered at the earliest time • So impact needs to be embedded in all activity from the concept of an idea – not an add-on

  9. Embedding using Pathways to Impact • New Primary resource for enabling engagement with potential beneficiaries of research • Available since 2009 • Eligible costs - can include employment of specialist knowledge transfer staff, consultancy fees, publication and marketing costs, public engagement activity, engagement events, networking activities, people exchange, etc • Pathways to impact should be part of the earliest consideration for a research grant – consideration of potential impact should be core to developing the proposal

  10. Impact Acceleration Accounts • Retain key benefits of KTA/KTS • Focus on secondments and Proof of concept/follow on • Strategic focus for impact engagement with key HEIs • Based on algorithmic funding, covering 95% of our portfolio • Let us know your success stories

  12. National Importance or Impact?

  13. Reviewer Form - National Importance Section • Please comment on the national importance of the research. Include how the research: • (1) Contributes to, or helps maintain the health of other disciplines, contributes to addressing key UK societal challenges and/or contributes to future UK economic success and development of emerging industry(s); • (2) Meets national needs by establishing/maintaining a unique world leading activity; • (3) Complements other UK research already funded in the area, including any relationship to the EPSRC portfolio.

  14. Reviewer Form - Impact Section • Please comment on the pathway to impact identified for the work particularly: • (1)How complete and realistic are the impacts identified for this work; • (2) The effectiveness of the activities identified to help realise these impacts, including the resources requested for this purpose; • (3) The relevance and appropriateness of any beneficiaries or collaborators

  15. National Importance Impact In Summary… • contributes to addressing key UK societal challenges, contributes to current or future UK economic success and/or enables future development of key emerging industry(s) • Meets national strategic needs by establishing or maintaining a unique world leading research activity • Fits with and complements other UK research already funded in the area or related areas National Importance Impact Summary Who will be the beneficiaries of the research ? How they will benefit? Impact Pathways to Impact What will actually be done to accelerate the route to Impact? Academic Beneficiaries How the research will benefit other researchers in the field? Who might benefit in other disciplines, and what will be done to ensure they benefit? As part of NI applicants should state which research areas their proposal relates to.

  16. Exercise • Split into two groups • The quiz sheet shows a number of quotes from reviewer forms • All were either commenting on National Importance or Impact • With your group, look through the quotes and decide if you think which assessment criterion it is commenting on • 15 mins then we’ll go through the answers!

  17. Reviewer Form National Importance Impact Section Please comment on the pathway to impact identified for the work particularly: How complete and realistic are the impacts identified for this work; The effectiveness of the activities identified to help realise these impacts, including the resources requested for this purpose; The relevance and appropriateness of any beneficiaries or collaborators Please comment on the national importance of the research. Include how the research: • Contributes to, or helps maintain the health of other disciplines, contributes to addressing key UK societal challenges and/or contributes to future UK economic success and development of emerging industry(s); • Meets national needs by establishing/maintaining a unique world leading activity; • Complements other UK research already funded in the area, including any relationship to the EPSRC portfolio.
