  5. SANCTIFICATION: • 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, “Or know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” • Verse 11, “And such were some of you: but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.”

  6. SANCTIFICATION: What Is Sanctification? • hagiazo “To separate from profane things and dedicate to God.” (Strong’s) • “To purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin; to purify internally by renewing of the soul.” (Strong’s)

  7. SANCTIFICATION: What Is Sanctification? • hagiazo used of: • The gold adorning the Temple and of the gift laid on the altar. Matthew 23:16-17,19 • Food. 1 Timothy 4:5 • The unbelieving spouse of a believer. 1 Corinthians 7:14-16 • The ceremonial cleansing of the Israelites. Hebrews 9:13-14 • The Father’s Name. Luke 11:2; cf. Leviticus 10:3

  8. SANCTIFICATION: What Is Sanctification? hagiazo used of: • The consecration of the Son by the Father. John 10:36 • The Lord Jesus devoting Himself to the redemption of His people. John 17:19 • The setting apart of the believer for God.Acts 20:32 • The effect on the believer of the death of Christ. Hebrews 10:10, said of God, and 2:11; 13:12, said of the Lord Jesus. • The separation of the believer from the world in his behavior – by the Father through the Word. John 17:17,19

  9. SANCTIFICATION: What Is Sanctification? hagiazo used of: • The believer who turns away from things that dishonor God and His gospel. 2 Timothy 2:21 • The acknowledgment of the Lordship of Christ. 1 Peter 3:15(from Vine’s Expository Dictionary)

SANCTIFICATION: What Is Sanctification? hagiazo used of: • The root from which the word “sanctify” comes is the same as that from which the word “saint” is also derived. • We are “sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in every place” (1 Corinthians 1:2).

SANCTIFICATION: Who / What Sanctifies? • Blood of Christ (grace and power). Hebrews 13:12 • Holy Spirit (agent of our sanctification).2 Thessalonians 2:13 (1 Peter 1:2). • Truth (means). John 17:17, 19 – When sinner obeys truth in faith. • Obedience to the gospel. Romans 6:17-22. • God’s grace (blood of Christ) and man’s faith (obey gospel).

SANCTIFICATION: When Are We Sanctified? 1 Corinthians 12:13, “For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body.” (the church - Ephesians 1:22-23) Galatians 3:26-27, “For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ.” 1 Corinthians 6:11, “washed, justified, sanctified.” (cf. Acts 18:8-11)

  15. SANCTIFICATION: When Are We Sanctified? Ephesians 5:25-27, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it; that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself a glorious (church), not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

  16. Conclusion: Are You Sanctified? • Set apart from sin by the blood of Jesus. Hebrews 10:29. • 2 Timothy 2:21, “If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, meet for the master’s use, prepared unto every good work.”
