6. Indiana Health Index for a Tobacco-Free Lifestyle (INdex)

7. INdex Purpose • A web-based tool to help individual schools and school corporations assess tobacco-free policies and programs and plan for and implement improvement. Derived from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) School Health Index.

8. INdex Description Identify strengths and weaknesses in health policies and programs to prevent tobacco-use and addiction, Develop an action plan for improving student health in this critical area, and Involve teachers, parents, students, and community in improving school tobacco-use prevention and addiction policies, programs, and services.

INdex includes • An introduction, answers to procedural questions, & materials on tobacco and youth • A simple, confidential log-in & tracking procedure • Separate, step-by-step assessment & planning components • Links to resources to help strengthen tobacco-use & addiction prevention policies & programs • A way to store data for future use & print out assessment results & planning documents

11. Reference Tool Purpose A web-based reference tool that highlights over 1000 key resources to strengthen school-based tobacco-use and addiction prevention policies and programs.

12. Reference Tool Description It includes the following materials: 1. Indiana-specific Resources: Support from the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation (ITPC). 2. CDC Guidelines: Suggestions for school health programs to prevent tobacco-use and addiction. 3. Sample School Policy to Discourage Tobacco-use: A comprehensive school policy sample from the Association of State Boards of Education. 4. Tobacco-Free School Environments: Resources and web links dealing with tobacco-free school environments.

Resources for Parents and Families: Aids to reinforce tobacco-use and addiction prevention at home 7. Policymaking Strategies: Four presentations that provide an introduction to the policymaking process for those who want to advance school tobacco-use goals. 8. Health Standards: An unabridged version of the Indiana Academic Standards for Health Education.

14. Reference Tool Description 9. Fast Facts: Links to fact sheets dealing with various aspects of tobacco-use and youth. 10. Tobacco Links: Links to organizations involved in tobacco-use and addiction prevention—both on a national and state level. 11. Print Resources: Mainly federal sources on tobacco-use and addiction prevention. 12. Tobacco Laws: Federal and statelaws related to tobacco and youth and tobacco education.

15. Tobacco-Free School Environment Video

16. Video Purpose • The National Association of State Boards of Education states that: A tobacco-free environment is fundamental to any school effort designed to prevent or reduce tobacco addiction in young people. Policy makers should take a firm stand that the use of tobacco is strictly prohibited on school grounds by anyone and at all times.” • This video increases awareness of the benefits of tobacco-free school environments. The audience for video includes school administrators, board members, teachers, parents, students, and community members.

Video Description Available in short and extended versions, video includes: • Rationale for tobacco-free school environment policy as part of a comprehensive tobacco prevention education program. • Indiana case studies, shot in Henry County, Bedford/North Lawrence, West Noble, Shelbyville, and Washington Township (Marion County), that demonstrate tobacco-free policies in very different settings in Indiana and at different stages of development. • Strategies for successful development and implementation. • Interviews with school administrators, school board members, teachers, and students emphasizing impact of a tobacco-free school environment policy on educational environment.
