  2. Why the survey matters

  3. Your views count The survey is your opportunity to help improve the quality of postgraduate and foundation training across the UK. By filling in the survey you help us and the GMC check that you and your colleagues are receiving high quality training in a safe and effective clinical environment. Your feedback about your training post will help identify areas of good practice and areas that need improvement. You can find detailed case studies of how survey results have influenced improvements at www.gmc-uk.org/nts. We know you may not always see the results of the survey in action – sometimes you’ve moved on before changes and improvements are made to the post you gave views on – but your response does matter. Your feedback is crucial to help make sure you are provided with high quality training.

  4. How results from this survey are used Optional Following the feedback you shared with us last year we have… [include details here of actions which your deanery has taken following last year’s results]

  5. Survey content

  6. What the survey asks you It should take between 15-20 minutes Generic training questions (multiple choice) General questions about your training post. Programme/specialty specific questions (multiple choice) Questions about your training programme (eg Foundation Programme or Cardiology) including academic questions if you are an academic trainee. Bullying and undermining (free text) If you have a concern about bullying and/or undermining, that hasn’t been resolved locally, you can report it here. Patient safety (free text) If you have a concern about patient safety, that hasn’t been resolved locally, you can report it here.

  7. Responding to your feedback Those responsible for delivering your training must listen to your views and respond to the results. • Many of you said that your workload had increased. You also said you were concerned about the impact of poorly designed rotas on your local training experience. • This year, the GMC will report on rota design to help pinpoint where issues exist.  • Following positive feedback to a trial survey earlier this year, the NTS now has a question set on work-based burnout. These questions are optional. • These questions were developed with the help of doctors in training across the UK, researchers, the BMA and other representatives of medical education and training organisations across the UK.

  8. Confidentiality

  9. Confidentiality Your answers to multi-choice questions on training are always confidential. They will only be available in the NTS online reporting tool after being aggregated. Responses to multiple choice questions are treated in the strictest confidence and are only reported publicly in aggregated form to prevent identification of individuals. Your free text responses are treated differently. In order for your concerns to be addressed, the GMC will share your verbatim comments with your deanery/HEE local team, who in turn may share them with your employer/training provider and other regulators if needed. The GMC share your feedback so that your concern can be properly investigated and addressed. Concerns are expected to be investigated in a sensitive way which protects you from any adverse consequences. For more information about this, please read the confidentiality page at www.gmc-uk.org/nts
