Expectations • This is your degree • Your program requirements as well as other degree requirements can be found in the UAF Catalog • You are responsible for completing • All your program requirements • All required paperwork • As with all students at UAF you must comply with the Student Code of Conduct

Student Status • Good standing / Active / Continuing Student Status • You must be registered in six credits at the 400- and/or 600-level per academic year (fall, spring, summer) • Temporary Leave of Absence • If you need to temporarily suspend studies, you must submit an approved “Leave of Absence” form to the Graduate School • Reinstatement vs. Re-admission • If you do not maintain enrollment in 6 credits per academic year (as per item 1), AND you are within two years of your last enrollment, you will have to apply for reinstatement into your program • If you have not been enrolled as required in item 1 in over 2 years, then you need to reapply for admission.

The first year • During the first semester you should file an Appointment of Committee form • By the end of the first year youshould file a Graduate Study Plan (GSP) • Must at a minimum match program requirements • Otherwise a petition is needed • To remain in good standing an “Annual Report” must be on file EVERY year by May 15th • Annual report must be filed regardless of whether you havefinished all their coursework or not • To be eligible for any Graduate School funding opportunities, you must have a current Annual Report on file

The second year and beyond • To remain in good standing an “Annual Report” must be on file EVERY year by May 15th • Report on Comprehensive Exam (if required) • Advancement to Candidacy • Graduate Petition Form (if necessary) • Report on Thesis/Dissertation/Project Defense (if necessary) • Format check of thesis or dissertation (for programs that require them)

Deadlines: How to find them • Gradschool > Dates & Deadlines • Departments and Deans have earlier deadlines than the Graduate School for theses/dissertations/projects • Gradschool > Graduation Information > Ready to Graduate? • PhDs have a few more items to submit than Master’s students Graduation Information

Outside ExaminerWho needs one and when? • All PhD students taking • oral comprehensive exams or • defending a dissertation • Gradsch > Forms > Request for an Outside Examiner • Date/Time/Location Requirements • Dissertation Defense must be on UAF campus • At least 2 weeks prior to the exam or defense, the earlier the better • We will email you once an Outside Examiner has been assigned

  14. UAF E-MAIL • Every student is assigned a UAF e-mail account when you enroll. UAF uses GOOGLE mail. • Go to http://www.alaska.edu/google/ for more information. • UAF uses your preferred e-mail to communicate with students. Make sure you update your UAOnline account under “Your contact information” and check which email you have listed as “Preferred”. • If you do not know your UAF e-mail address, let us know – we can find out for you.

  16. Title IX/AlcoholEdu Friendly reminder: If you have not already taken the Title IX/Alcohol EDU training please see your email from Admissions and/or Center for Student Rights & Responsibilities. Training must be completed October 31st. (You will not be able to register for spring if you do not complete it)

  17. Time Management • Check out Academic Advising Center’s Study Skills for ways to improve. • eLearning also provides some tips on how to better manage your time.

  18. Fall 2018 Deadlines • First day of class is Monday, August 27, 2018. • The last day to receive a 100% refund on tuition if you drop a course is • Friday, September 7, 2018 • Fee payment deadline is Monday, September 11, 2018

Tuition Awards/Contract letters • Deficiency courses may be covered • If written approval has been received from the major advisorOR • If it is on your Graduate Study Plan (GSP) • The Graduate School (not the UAF Bursar’s Office) posts the tuition award to each student’s account • We check for the following things before posting the tuition award • Enrollment: must be full-time (9 credits) • Current FERPA certificate (TAs only) • GPA greater than 3.0 • Upload your contract letters to our new eform

Residency Status Students eligible for Alaska resident tuition generally include: • an Alaska resident, defined as a person who is a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen who has been physically present in Alaska for at least the past two years; • students who received a State of Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend within the last 12 months and can certify they have been in Alaska for the past 12 months; • Other eligibility requirements can be found in the UAF catalog. • Students applying for resident tuition assessment must file a residency form with the Office of Admissions and the Registrar before the published end of the add/drop period for regular semester-length courses for the semester for which residency is sought. Residency status is not automatically granted.

Graduate Health Insurance • Eligibility • Must be a RA/TA/Fellow • Students who are not on an RA/TA/Fellowship cannot purchase this policy • Fall and Spring/Summer only • Names are submitted on a regular basis beginning just before the semester starts and through the end of fee payment • Claim Questions: • Margaret Kelloggmekellogg@alaska.edu x7043 • Health insurance company website: • www.uhcsr.com • Insurance cards must be printed by you from your UHCSR online account

  22. ATTENTION! • Do Not Ignore any emails from the UAF Bursar’s Office. • If you receive an email from them, check your UAOnline account. • If you have any questions, please contact the Bursar's Office or the Graduate School.

Coffee Klatches with the Graduate School • Beginning this fall, the Graduate School will be having a monthly Coffee Klatch • We will be covering topics from: • Career Services • Wellness • General graduate school questions will also be answered regardless of the topic • The first Coffee Klatch will be on Wednesday, 09/19/2018 at 1pm in the Graduate School Office. • Light refreshments and possible snacks will be served.
