  2. Essay • A piece of writing that gives your thoughts (commentary) about a subject • All essays should have at least five paragraphs: introduction, body paragraphs (also called the body of an essay), conclusion

Paragraph #1: Introductory Paragraph (at least 3-4 good sentences) Paragraph #2: First Body Paragraph (5-10 sentences) Paragraph #3: Second Body Paragraph (5-10 sentences) Paragraph #4: Third Body Paragraph (5-10 sentences Paragraph #5: Concluding Paragraph (at least 3-4 good sentences) Essay Form

  4. Introduction • The first paragraph in an essay • It includes the thesis at the end.

What is a thesis? • A sentence with a subject and an opinion (also called commentary), and three arguable prongs (ideas, topics, reasons why) • The thesis provides the focus for your essay. • Example: California is the best state of all for a vacation because of the fabulous beaches, the exciting theme parks, and the excellent variety of restaurants.

  6. Introduction Paragraph • Sentence #1: all commentary. Starts with a theme or themes. Sentence #2: says more about sentence #1. Is all commentary. • Sentence #3: says more about sentence #2, narrowing the subject closer to the thesis • Sentence #4: the thesis. Has subject, opinion and at least 2 prongs (reasons why…) • There is no concrete detail in this paragraph.

As an American you don’t have to go to a foreign country to have a fun vacation there are lots of great vacation destinations here in the USA. Since you can’t always be on vacation it is important to choose the best place to go on your vacation. California is the best state of all for a vacation because of the fabulous beaches, the exciting theme parks, and the excellent variety of restaurants.

  12. Commentary • Commentary means your opinion, interpretation, insight, analysis, personal response, feeling, evaluation, explication, and reflections about a concrete detail in an essay.

  13. Body Paragraph Example • The beaches in California are some of the best in the world. With 840 miles of coastline California has many beaches for people who like to surf, swim, or just walk along the beach. Every year there are many different surfing competitions held on various beaches in California – including the Surfing America USA Championships held every June. On any given night you can see many couples strolling on the beach enjoying the scenery. A lot of television shows and movies are filmed on California’s beaches. The series Baywatch focused entirely on lifeguards who work on the beaches outside Los Angeles. Many viewers tuned in every week because of how nice the scenery and the beaches are.

Conclusion Paragraph • The conclusion is the last paragraph in the essay. • It is all commentary. • It does not repeat key words from anywhere in the essay. • It gives a finished feeling to the paper. • The last sentence should connect to the theme of the work—the “so what?” OR be a universal statement.

The millions of tourist who come to California every year agree that California is the best state to go to spend your vacation.
