Example Essay: Shooting Stars • As a group, you are going to read the sample Shooting Stars essay. • Think about the essay you just wrote for SOH. • Make a list of the following information: • Does this person refer to the question? [EXAMPLE?] • Do they refer to poetic techniques? [EXAMPLE?] • Successful elements of essay? [EXAMPLE?] • What this essay does that you are going to apply to your essay?

Individual Task • Imagine you have been given the following essay question: • Choose a poem which deals with an important issue such as war, crime, poverty, or racism. • Explain how the poet deepens your understanding of the issue by the choice of content and the skilful use of poetic techniques. • What Points would you include in this essay?(PEAR points) • Make a list of Points into your jotter.

Potential Questions • Choose a poem which describes a person’s experience. • Explain how the poetic technique used to describe the experience make the poem more interesting. • Choose a poem which arouses strong emotion in you. • Describe how you feel about the poem, and explain how the poet leads you to feel this way. • Choose a poem in which the poet creates a particular mood or atmosphere. • Show how the poet creates this mood or atmosphere by his or her choice of subject matter and use of poetic techniques.

Homework • Due Tuesday 1st October • You are going to write a CEL on Shooting Stars using the following question: • Choose a poem which deals with an important issue such as war, crime, poverty, or racism. • Explain how the poet deepens your understanding of the issue by the choice of content and the skilful use of poetic techniques. • Use the Points we collated today to help you as well as the sample essay. • REMEMBER: Your first timed essay will be on Shooting Stars when we come back after September Weekend.

[A good old fashioned topic sentence] • Evidence: What is the evidence you are going to justify your point with [QUOTE] • Analysis: detailed analysis of the quote linked to the point [Focus on techniques] • Refer to question: Link what you have been discussing back to the question. [Use key words from the question]
