  1. MCNC/NCRENDR/Business Continuity Joel Dunn StateNets, 2/7/2007

  2. The plan… • Idea • Challenges • Status • Opportunity

  3. The idea… • “The value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of users of the system.” - Metcalfe’s Law • Floorspace @ network nexus • A rapidly growing number of network nodes attached to state networks • Ability to leverage for many services: colo, collaborative managed hosting, DR • Our focus here is DR/BC -- what makes sense, what are the opportunites, what are the challenges?

  4. The challenges (for DR/BC)… • Geography • Distance • Multiple sites?

  5. The challenges (cont.)… • Hot, warm, cold? • Heterogeneous environments • Space - can’t afford to replicate everything • Virtualization? • Budget constraints • Modest annual fee • Be able to test w/o breaking the bank • Pass muster with audit • Actually work!

  6. The status for MCNC/NCREN… • We have a number of colo and managed hosting customers, some of whom are using our services for DR/BC services • We have a nascent DR “space subscription” service offering (working on contract with first customer) • We are served by multiple facilities-based service providers • We are working closely with the UNC system (UNC-General Administration) and awaiting an RFP for DR/BC services that is due to be released in ~March, to which we’ll respond and try to shape our service to match for the UNC system

  7. The opportunity… • Provide effective DR/BC service to the community at affordable price point • Create community support infrastructure (our state network communities!) to help in the event of a problem

  8. Success! • Value is increased by leveraging our network and human resources!
