  2. You would like to spend some time with somebody. How to manage it?

  3. Steps • Talking about plans • Agreeing • Disagreeing • Objecting • Persuading • Compromising

  4. Plans At first you can check your friend‘s plans: • What are your plans (for tonight)? • Have you got plans (for tomorrow)? • Are you busy (at the weekend)? • What are you doing (on Sunday)? • What about (Saturday evening)?

  5. But if you have your own idea, you can make a suggestion. • Shall we (go to the cinema)? • What about (ridinga bike)? • Why don‘t we (watch a DVD)? • Let’s try that (new Italian restaurant). • Maybe we could (play a game of poker).

  6. Agreeing If you like your friends idea, say it! • That’s a good idea. • Sure. • Great idea!

  7. Disagreeing - apology If you can‘t accept your friend‘s idea, say: • I’m afraid I can’t. I’m going to visit my relatives. • Thanks, but I’ve already got plans (for tonight). • It’s kind of you to ask, but I’m busy (on Saturday).

  8. Objecting You don‘t like your friends plan for some reasons, so how to show that you disagree? • I’m not in the mood (to watch another movie). • I don’t fancy (going out for a walk). • I’m not really into (cards). • I don’t want to go (to the cinema again). • I don’t think that’s a good idea.

  9. Persuading Your friend doesn‘t like your plan, but you still think that it is worth to do it. How to persuade your friend? • (But) I still think (it would be nice to go out). • Don’t you think (we need fresh air)? • It’ll be worth in the end. • You’ll enjoy it when you get there. • Oh, come on!

  10. Compromising Your friend still thinks his idea is better. And you finally agree with him. You can say: • OK. You’ve talked me into it. • OK. Why not? • OK. You’ve persuaded me. • But only if you (buy me a drink)!

  11. Now It‘s your turn! Complete the sentences with suitable phrases. • A: ………… ………… ………… go out for a walk? • B: ………… ………… fancy it. It’s too hot. • A: ………… ………… a bike ride, then? • B: ………… ………… in the mood. • A: Oh, …………..on! • B: OK, you’ve ………… ………… into it.

  12. Now It‘s your turn! Complete the sentences with suitable phrases. • A: Maybe we could go out for a walk? • B: I don‘t fancy it. It’s too hot. • A: What about a bike ride, then? • B: I‘m not in the mood. • A: Oh, come on! • B: OK, you’ve talked me into it.

  13. Make an excuse! Student A: Make a suggestion. Use the activities below or your own ideas. Student B: Object to it. Give reason for objecting. A: ‚Do you fancy going for a walk?‘ B: ‚Notreally. It’s too cold outside.‘ • go out for something to eat / on a bike ride / swimming • play cards / chess / badminton / computer games • do some homework together • listen to music

  14. Dialogue Work in pairs. Prepare a dialogue. Each of you: • should suggest something to do • make objections • then agree on a compromise.
