Minimum Recommended 4-year College Admission Requirements: • 4 credits English • 4 credits Social Studies • 3 credits Math+ (Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry) • 3 credits Science+ (all lab sciences) • 2+ credits Foreign Language • 1+ credits Fine/Performing Art *Honors and AP courses are recommended **GPA - as high as possible ***Testing - SAT or ACT and/or SAT: Subject Test

  4. Testing…what do I need? •For the military? ASVAB •For college? BOTH/EITHER the SAT or ACT…which ever you do BETTER ON is the one you’ll RETAKE (if needed) and use to apply for admission. Did you take a blue/orange card during the last SAP?

To enlist with the military: ASVAB – Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery • ONLINE ASVAB – limited to the number of computers • military aptitude test – needed to enlist in the military • English, reading, math and skills inventories • offered twice each school year • FREE • Wed., Sept. 10, 2019 at 8:45 am in Library • Sign ups going on NOW – deadline to register is Sept. 4 in the College & Career Center

  6. For college: SAT (with essay or no essay?) • Offered 7 times a year • Register online and pay $64.50 (with essay) and $49.50 (without essay) • Essay or not…depends on you college requirements. LOOK THIS UP before signing up for the wrong test! • Must UPLOAD a HEADSHOT photo to your registration • Fee waivers available to 11th and 12th graders eligible for free/reduced lunch. See Ms. Inouye BEFORE registering. • ADD 4 colleges (or NCAA/NAIA) at the time of registration for free! • Don’t worry if you’ll get a low score; what if it’s higher?

Lots of GREAT information from your February 2019 ACT score report: • Scores in English, math, reading, science and essay – how did you do?? • Do I need to study/practice? • Interest Inventory – does it help you determine a career and select a major? • Do you need to retest for the college that you want to apply to??? • Do I need another copy because I lost my original? Ask Ms. Inouye.

For SOME colleges: SAT: Subject Test (same website as SAT) • college specific – check college admission requirements FIRST • can take up to three subjects in one day • Register and pay online - cost varies based on number of tests • fee waivers available to free/reduced lunch eligible students. See Ms. Inouye BEFORE registering. • Tell your parents about the difference between SAT and SAT: Subject Tests and don’t sign up for the WRONG test.

  12. Test Prep: Fall ACT Prep Class beginning on Sept. 6, 2019. Two Fridays after school and one Saturday morning. First come, first served until the class is filled. Cost is $60. Free online prep for —SAT – https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org • Free paper study booklets available in the CCC for the SAT and ACT • Borrow study books from the Kalaheo and public libraries.

  13. Resume: • Using your activities log, transfer all your activities into a resume. Remember, college and scholarship committees like students who are “involved” with activities. • Sample resume available in the CCC. • Save your resume on your computer and continue to update it with new activities each year. • PTP is a GRADUATION requirement. “U” grades will keep you OUT OF ACTIVITIES! • Resume should be provided to any person that you ASK to write a letter of recommendation for you. Minimum advance notice of two weeks (or more) should be provided.

Letters of Recommendation: • Ask teachers and counselors ONLY IF YOU NEED a letter of recommendation. • Use the SAME teacher and/or counselor letters for all college and scholarship applications. • You must ASK the person BEFORE adding the names to an application. • You NEED to submit a Consent for Release for Letter of Recommendation Form to Ms. Inouye before ASKING teachers and counselors. • Give teachers and counselors a MINIMUM of 2 weeks (preferably ONE MONTH) to complete your letter of recommendation. This does NOT INCLUDE WEEKENDS!!!

  15. Is Collegiate Athletics For You? NCAA Div. 1 and 2 Athletics • 16 Core Courses: • 4 years English • 3 years Math (Algebra 1 and higher) • 2 years Science (minimum of 1 lab science) • 1 year additional English, Math or Science • 2 years Social Studies • 4 years of additional courses (from any area above or foreign language) • Must complete 10 of the 16 courses prior to the 7th semester (before the beginning of senior year) to PLAY. • SAT or ACT score depending on your 16 core grade point average • Register at https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/ before the end of senior year. • Bring in Forms 1 & 2 for transcript processing. • Send SAT or ACT score directly from testing agency to Clearinghouse • Fee waiver available if you are eligible for an SAT or ACT fee waiver NAIA Athletics – must register with NAIA to compete • Register at www.playnaia.org • Submit your transcript request form for processing. • Send you SAT or ACT score directly from testing agency to the NAIA • Fee waiver available if you are eligible for an SAT or ACT fee waiver

  18. Work Permits and Job Board: 16 years or older • Apply online at: http://hawaii.gov/labor/wsd/wsd/youth_attn.shtml/ • After applying online, the work permit will be emailed to you to print. Take the work permit and a form of ID (Driver’s License, State of Hawaii ID card, Military ID, or Birth Certificate) to the employer for verification. 14 or 15 years old • Complete a Minor’s Certificate of Employment Form with employer and parent signatures • AND one of the forms of identification listed above • Job Announcements posted in the CCC Newsletter

College Search Process: Search for College(s): • www.collegeboard.org • www.actstudent.org • www.nacacnet.org • Use college/university websites: • www.hawaii.edu • www.csumentor.edu • www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions • Attend college presentations in the College & Career Center starting August 30, 2019 • Attend the NACAC College Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019 at the Convention Center from 8:30-11:00am OR 5-8pm. • Attend the Christian College Fair on Saturday Oct. 19, 2019 from 5-7 pm pm at Hawaii Baptist Academy, Stan Sagert Campus • Participate in visits to local college campuses • Field Trips • Open Houses

College Application windows and DEADLINES VARY by school: • California State University (4-year, public) Schools: • PRIORITY application window is Oct. 1- Nov. 30 of Senior Year • Courses, grades, and SAT or ACT scores need to meet criteria at time of application • www.csumentor.edu • University of California (4-year, public) Schools: • PRIORITY application SUBMISSION window is Nov. 1-30 of Senior Year • Courses, grades, SAT or ACT with Writing, SAT Subject Test scores need to meet criteria at time of application • www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions • University of Hawaii at Manoa: • Priority application window is January 5; deadline of March 1 of senior year • Courses, GPA, SAT or ACT scores need to meet criteria at time of application • www.hawaii.edu

Transcripts: • Transcript request forms can be picked up in the CCC, front office or from the Kalaheo Website>Information>Registration • Request form MUST be turned in for processing to room 6 in the office. • One form per application (Official or Unofficial) • Cost varies per transcript • Parent signature required if you are not 18. • 5 BUSINESS days (this does not include weekends) processing time. • It is YOUR responsibility to turn in the transcript form PRIOR to the deadline. To be safe, submit it ONE WEEK before the application deadline. • Any question regarding transcripts, contact the Student Service Office (room 6) or the Registrar (room 3).
