  1. The Gospel According to Mark part 14“Defilement comes from within”Mark 7:1-23

  2. Holiness here, is described as an act of washing one’s hands. The traditions of the Jews were elevated in importance beyond that which the scriptures actually taught.

  3. The word used for wash is, “Baptizo” we recognize this word as our word for baptism, which means to immerse. My bible uses the word “couch” but it really means to recline, this word is the same word for table.

  4. Isaiah had said, “in vain they worship Me.” The Greek word for vain is “Mat’en”, which means fruitlessly. The root word is “Massaomai” which means to chew or gnaw. So, that the meaning of the word “Maten” is; they eat and chew but nothing of value comes from it. It is simply and exercise in futility.

  5. Fully cognoscente of what they were doing, they marched on; knowing the Word, yet disregarding it.

  6. The word “hypocrite,” is a Greek term meaning to “wear a mask” as an actor playing a part. In these passages Jesus is really scolding them for following the Talmud above the Torah.

  7. The very piousness and holiness that they sought, comes from within you and not by the hypocritical acting of men; which is demonstrated only on the outside.

  8. It is the heart where one is defiled, and defilement of the heart comes from within and is revealed without. And, wearing a mask that portrays a pure heart is not at all the same as a pure heart.

  9. Jesus is clearly asserting that evil is birthed in the heart, and then revealed in the flesh.

  10. All these things that they faithfully executed, bore zero spiritual fruit. Which effectively left those they were teaching, as blind and unrepentant as they were before.

  11. How then are we to know what is right, and what is wrong? First step, cast off all your paradigms and idea’s about what you think scripture really says. Second, decide to study the Bible as opposed to just reading it. Look for the common themes and always look for the answer to understanding a text within it’s context.

  12. Third, watch your hermeneutics. You must apply the same kind of understanding about a word or text consistently, throughout your study. Something cannot mean one thing or be understood in one way and then seen in another way later, unless the text itself tells you to.

  13. Fourth, study by topic or theme.

  14. Fifth, study the history of the church. By studying this topic, over time you will begin to piece together just when and where we as God’s church strayed from the word and began to follow the reasoning of men, rather than the absolute authority of God.

  15. The last thing we want to do, is be guilty like the Pharisees of putting our own beliefs and traditions above the word of God.Making all the work we do as “in vain”, fruitless.

  16. Remember whatJesus says, “If anyone has ears to hear, let Him hear!”
