The 1990s: A defining decade By: Robert Park, bridget murphy, alinapituch, darbygallo, and nick dublin
1992 Presidential election • America was in a recession. • Ross Perot allowed for the second largest shift in electoral votes • Character issues were raised during the campaign • At least 75% of America thought the economy was in bad or very bad shape. • The decision Bush made while he was president to raise taxes effected ho the people felt about him. • Clinton connected with the youth and the blacks of America. • By winning Clinton ended a twelve year run for republicans in the White House Giving the Democrats full control of the White House and Senate.
How did Clinton compromise with republicans after 1994? • Due to a predominantly Republican Congress after 1994, Clinton was forced to compromise with them to keep things relatively in balance. • He did so by: • -restricting the federal welfare program • -giving middle-class citizens tax cuts • -enacting many anti-crime programs • -and passing several federal spending cuts • The only topics that Clinton would not compromise on were gun control and environmental protection.
Columbine shooting • This was a massacre which occurred at Columbine High School on April 20th, 1999, in which two senior students embarked on a shooting spree, killing 12 students and 1 teacher, and wounding many others. The pair of shooters then committed suicide. • This massacre provoked debate regarding whether gun control should be a more discussed subject, and whether stricter laws should be enacted when it came to purchasing a firearm.
Don’t ask, don’t tell • Clinton backed away from his promise to let gays serve in the military, and instead implemented this policy. • This policy barred openly gay individuals from serving in the military, and prohibited military personnel from harassing closeted service members.
The LA Riots • Occurred after a jury acquitted four police officers accused of beating Rodney King following a high-speed pursuit • Also known as the ‘Rodney King’ riots. • During the six days following the verdict, LA experienced widespread assault, arson, theft, and murder. • 53 died and property damages amounted to nearly $1 billion.
Clinton’s Impeachment • August 5, 1994- independent counsel headed by Kenneth Starr was selected to investigate Bill and Hillary Clinton’s 1982 Whitewater land deal. • Clinton was accused of encouraging a 24-year-old intern at the White House to lie to lawyers in a sexual harassment lawsuit about the affair with Clinton
Clinton’s Impeachment • Clinton lied about this to the Grand Jury http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiIP_KDQmXs • The House of Representatives voted to impeach Clinton in October 1998 • 2/3 of the American public stood against Clinton’s impeachment
Clinton’s Impeachment • December 1998- approved two articles of impeachment 1. Perjury before a grand jury 2. Obstruction of justice • Clinton is the second American president to face impeachment
Economic Impact of Technology • Longest and largest economic boom • Booming stock market – rose higher than ever before • Technology stocks began to soar • Economic boom translated into the low unemployment rates • Inflation and interest rates remained low • Hubble space telescope, launched in 1990, transmitted vital information and photos from space, leading to new innovations in space technology • Growth of cross border economies, outsourcing jobs, international organizations, and multinational corporations helped to advance American economy • The European Union was formed in 1993 to allow capital, goods, and labor to move freely among member nations
Social Impact of Technology--BENEFITS • Public fascination encouraged innovation • New technologies – computers, Internet, World Wide Web – changed communication and the way business was conducted • Internet enabled users to communicate globally • People began joining discussion groups and accessing information from countless databases • World Wide Web linked Internet sites and allowed America advance socially
Social Impact of Technology--CONCERNS • Social problems in America’s society appeared in cyberspace • A fully computerized society would not need human workers • Scientific advances would worsen social divisions – wealthy, well-educated Americans would master the new technologies while less privileged Americans would not
Cultural Impact of Technology • The Internet aided in the exportation of American popular culture • By 1990, popular culture had become one of the most profitable U.S. exports • Some critics expressed concern that American culture would suffocate other cultures • Others worried that movies and television shows gave the world a distorted impression of life in the U.S.
The athletes of the nineties were all representin’ • The decade where sports were so fast the public was sweatin’ • And from hockey to boxing these guys were all fillin’ • The record books with their names, til’ the players were spillin’ greatness • Like it was nothing • Heinous critics couldn’t bother them with their bugging • And today we are still lovin’ the names • Who dominated the games
But their games were so big, how were they managable? • Air Jordan, Mike Tyson, Gretzky and the ear’ biting • Who would’ve thought that this decade was so exciting? • 200 points in a season as McGwire’s ball was breezing • Number 70 through the night sky • Say ‘hi’ • To a couple of legends, cementing their legacies and thrilling game endings • In a decade so huge, back when Tiger wasn’t a cheetah • But Tyson’s uppercut would meet ya in the jaw • And the full count would amount to Sosa becoming a God • So let’s call it a rap, kid just go back to your arcade • And fondly remember the 1990s decade.
Sports of the 90’s In the 1990’s the spread of steroids in base ball was so common for the average player specifically after the MLB Strike of 1994 The home run explosion happened in 1996 the average home runs in 1989 was a small 118.58 compared to the average 145.75 in 1995 in that very next year the average had increased exponentially to 177.22 On of our most known athletes was Michael Jordan He was in the Chicago Bulls He retired from playing basketball in 1998 and lives at home He lives with his wife and three kids He plays golf on his private course Lastly Shaquille O’Neal is another well known basketball player has been a veary popular icon for many modern day programs for children He is 7 feet 1 inch 235 pounds Drafted to Orlando Magic
Mark mcgwire & Sammy sosa • Both were professional baseball players • McGwire began his career with the Oakland Athletics • In 1997, McGwire was traded from the Oakland Athletics to the St. Louis Cardinals. • In 1998, it became clear that McGwire as well as the Chicago Cubs’ Sammy Sosa were on track to break Roger Maris’ single season home run record. • The home run leader changed many times throughout the season, but it was eventually McGwire who prevailed by hitting 70 home runs compared to Sosa’s 66. • Sosa began his MLB career with the Texas Rangers, who soon after traded him to the Chicago White Sox. • Sosa was involved in the ‘home run record chase’ with Mark McGwire in 1998. • Both Sosa and McGwire won Sports Illustrated’s ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award, and Sosa was invited to Bill Clinton’s 1999 State of the Union Address.
Wayne gretzky • Former Canadian professional hockey player, who played 20 seasons in the NHL • Nicknamed ‘The Great One’ and is often called ‘the greatest hockey player ever’. • Only NHL player to score over 200 points in one season • Scored over 100 points in 16 seasons, 14 of them being consecutive.
Tiger woods • American professional golfer who is known to be one of the most successful golfers of all time. • Has won 14 majors, and 72 PGA tour events throughout his career. • Around early 2010, Woods took a hiatus from his golfing career to focus on his marriage, after he admitted to infidelity. • Has won 16 World Golf Championships • Has more career Major wins and career PGA tour wins than any other active player.
Michael jordan • Former professional basketball player who played with the Chicago Bulls • Nicknames include ‘Air Jordan’ and ‘His Airness’ • Led the Bulls to three consecutive NBA championships from 1991-1993. • Won 5 MVP awards, and had 14 NBA All-Star game appearances. • Holds the NBA record for highest career regular season scoring average with 30.12 PPG • Was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
Mike tyson • Retired American professional heavyweight boxer • Known for his ‘heavy hands’ and controversial attitude both inside and outside of the ring. • Won his first 19 professional fights by knockout, with 12 of them occurring in the first round. • Nicknames include ‘Kid Dynamite’ and ‘The BaddestMan on the Planet’.

B. Longest and largest economic boom in history During the 1990s, the national debt in the United States increased by 75%, the GDP increased by 69%, and the stock market began to rapidly boom. Inflation became manageable and the unemployment rate decreased to below 5%, causing the stock market to boom.
