  2. Initial Interview • Family History • History of breast cancer and heart disease • Medical History • Postmenopausal and on hormone replacements • Lumpectomy for a benign tumor • Advanced osteoarthritis of the right hip and knee • Currently 10-15 lbs overweight • High stress level at work

  3. Last Interview • Went through dietary changes • Minimize fast food intake • Replaced current snacks with fruits, vegetables and trail mix • Stress the need of adequate hydration • Monitor calcium intake • Provided a chart with calcium enriched foods

  4. Medication • Hormone replacement therapy • Aspirin • Ibuprofen • No new side effects present

  5. Hormone replacements may cause breast cancer Regular self breast checks Mammograms done yearly RED FLAG! BREAST CANCER

  6. OSTEOARTHRITIS • is the most common form of arthritis that can affect the hands, hips, shoulders and knees • Affects the cartilage that protects the ends of the bones breaks down and causes pain and swelling • Most common after age 45

  7. Signs and Symptoms • Pain, stiffness and swelling around a joint especially when moving a joint

  8. Causes • Overweight – excess stress on joints • Age • Injury to a joint or repeated overuse

  9. Treatment • A variety of treatments can help to lessen pain and stiffness and to make movement easier.  Your active involvement in developing your prescribed treatment plan is essential • NSAIDS (Advil, Ibuprofen) • Aspirin • Topical creams and gels (Bengay) • Ice

  10. Education • What is it? Scale for pain, no activity when flares • Promote a decrease in stress • Increase activity with grandkids and BF • Future hip and knee surgery – benefits to put off

  11. Stress Relief Tips • Taking a walk during lunch time • To take a break from her work environment • Bath before bedtime • Stress ball at work • Exercises such as yoga and tai-chi • Employee Assistance Program

  12. Benefits of Exercise • Exercise helps reduce pain and prevents further joint damage.  It can also help you maintain a healthy weight, which puts less strain on your joints. • Not using a sore joint will cause the muscles around it to become weak, resulting in pain.

  13. Benefits cont. • improve muscle strength and tone, which will help to stabilize and protect osteoarthritic joints and reduce the pain. • Range of motion exercises help maintain or restore normal joint movement and relieve stiffness.

  14. Stretch and Strengthen • Low intensity aquabics/exercise • cycling • Weight bearing activity • walking • Stress reducing factors

  17. Relapse • It is a natural process of the lifestyle changing process • The important thing is to not to stress out and to continue the next day if possible

  18. Next Session • 2 weeks from now: • See how changes are going • Address any new questions/issues • Help continue to implement exercise and dietary changes • If the exercises are not decreasing her pain or increasing her ROM then implement modified versions to suit her needs
