  1. Class of 2018 Rising 9th Grade Information Night

  2. High School Schedule • JHS operates on a 4x4 Block Schedule • Four 90 minute classes per semester • Five minutes to change classes

  3. Grading System • Grading Scale A = 90-100 = 4.0 grade points B = 80-89 = 3.0 grade points C = 73-79 = 2.0 grade points D = 70-72 = 1.0 grade points F = Below 70 = 0.0 grade points

  4. Grading System • Grading Standards • Advanced Placement (AP) level courses carry a 10 point weight added to the final grade. • Must take the AP exam AND have a 70 average or higher to receive bonus points. • Honors level courses carry a 5 point weight added to the final grade.

Promotion and Graduation Requirements • Promotion Requirements • To enter the 10th Grade: 6 credits (4 Core Classes) • To enter the 11th Grade: 12 credits (8 Core Classes) • To enter the 12th Grade: 20 credits (12 Core Classes) • Graduation Requirements • Jefferson High School offers a College/Career Preparatory Diploma which requires a minimum of 28 credits for graduation.

  9. Science • 4 Required Units • Biology • Chemistry • AP Chemistry offered for Advanced Academic Pathway • Physics • AP Physics I offered for Advanced Academic Pathway • 4th Science Credit • Anatomy/Physiology, Environmental Science, AP Chemistry, or AP Physics II

  10. Social Studies • 4 Required Units • American Government • AP American Government/Politics: US offered for Advanced Academic Pathway • World History • US History • AP US History offered for Advanced Academic Pathway • Economics

  11. PE/Health • 1 or 3 Required Units • Personal Fitness/Health OR • Air Force JROTC I, II, III

  12. Additional Required Units • 3 Units Required • Modern Language or Latin* AND/OR • Career, Technical, & Agricultural Education AND/OR • Fine Arts *2 units of a modern language or Latin are required to enter the University System of Georgia

  13. Electives • The number of elective units necessary for graduation will vary. • The core and elective units combined must total at least 28 credits for graduation. .

  17. AP Literature and Composition • Designed for Highly motivated senior college prep students • Instructs students in extensive reading, writing, and critical thinking skills consistent with an introductory year of college English Literature and Composition

  19. AP Calculus & AP Statistics *Students on the Honors Track with AP have the option to double up in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade.

  21. Advanced Academic Pathways • The 4 required units in a core academic area (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies) must be taken. • At least 1 core credit must be taken at the AP or post-secondary level • 2 credits in the same foriegn language must be taken

  22. Career, Technical, andAgricultural Pathways • A series of 3 or 4 specified units in a CTAE approved pathway must be taken. • Pathways are offered in the following areas: • Agriculture • Business Management • Finance • Healthcare Science

  27. Financial Management—Accounting Pathway • Introduction to Business and Technology • Accounting I • Accounting II Students take an End-of Pathway assessment upon completion of these courses.

  28. Business and Technology Pathway • Introduction to Business and Technology • Business and Technology • Business Communications Students take the Microsoft Office Specialist Exam (MOS) upon completion of these courses. Students may certify in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

  29. FBLA -- Future Business Leaders of America • Gain a competitive edge for college and career success • Attend region and state conferences • Meet new friends • Explore different careers • Participate in competitive events

  31. Why take Business classes? • Financial knowledge and money management is needed in every aspect of your life no matter what your career choice. • Computers are used in most careers and in our everyday lives for communication, education, entertainment, and business.

  34. Patient Care Fundamentals Courses needed: • Intro to Healthcare Science Technology • Essentials of Healthcare • Lanier Tech (Fall Semester on JHS campus) • Medical Terminology • Nutrition • Intro to Healthcare • Lanier Tech (Spring Semester) • Nursing – lab skills • Nursing – patient care

  35. Certified Nursing Assistant • CNA exam administered after completion of this pathway. • Students may work at a hospital, long term care facility or assisted living facility. • Gain valuable experience in nursing

  36. Work Based Learning • Students may work during school hours at a facility that coincides with the student’s career choice and prior course work. • Local Examples: • Pro Therapy and Peak Therapy • Serenity Personal Care Home • Jackson County Emergency Services • Others

  37. Allied Health and Medicine Courses needed: • Introduction to Healthcare Science Technology • Essentials of Healthcare • Allied Health and Medicine • Students focus on the area of healthcare of interest such as physical therapy, pharmacy, social work, etc.

  38. Applications of Public Health Courses Needed: • Intro to Healthcare Science • Essentials of Healthcare • Applications of Public Health Students explore areas in epidemiology, disaster and emergency management, health educator, etc.

  39. Student Organization Health Occupations Students of America • Students at JHS who are members of HOSA organize annual blood drives at JHS and participate in various fund raisers and activities throughout the year. Community Service is a focus of this club.
