  2. Facts • Nelson Mandela was born in a small village called Mvezo • He was born in the year 1918 • His religion was methodist • He won the Bharat Ratna, Nobel Peace Prize, Order of Lenin and the Presidential medal of freedom

  3. His family • Nelson got married 3 times • There names were Evelyn NtokoMase, Winnie Madikvzelaand GracaMachel • He had 6 children • They are called Thembekik, Makaziwe, Makgato, Makaziwe, Zenani, Zindziswa

  4. Early life • He was brought up in the Thembu tribe • His father was the chief of the Thembu tribe • At 7 years of age, he set across the hills to a small shack which was a school • One day, he came home to hear that his father had died • He was sent to boarding school and then he went to university

  5. Being a lawyer • Nelson set up a law practice with Oliver Tambo • He joined a political party called the ANC • They tried to protest peacefully, but this didn’t work • They then started violent protests and Nelson wassent to prison

  6. Life in jail • The worst jail he went to was Robben Island • His prisoner number was 46664 • He was only allowed 2 visits per year • When he received a letter, the guards cut off bits of his letters • He was released from prison on 11th February, 1990

  7. Being president • He was elected President of South Africa in 1994 • In 1994, for the first time ever, all South Africans were allowed to vote • The election was on the 27th April • His presidential office was ‘Tuynhuys’, Cape Town • He retired as President in1999

  8. His death • Nelson died on the 5th of December 2013 • He died at 20:50 (local time) in his house in Houghton, Johannesburg • His funeral was in the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg • His death was announced by Jacob Zuma • He died at the age of 95
