Today’s “Take-Away” or Enduring Understanding… The evolution of new and powerful collaborative tools now available on the Internet has the potential to significantly transform teaching and learning in our classrooms. Whether we like it or not, we are now solidly situated in the 21st Century, where our students will be spending their entire working lives. We need to learn how we can infuse our social studies curriculum with 21st C. tools and skills- engaging our students in new ways of learning & working. In other words, we need to become skilled at creating “hybrid” learning environments and project based learning in our classrooms...

There is an urgent need for more 21st Century tools & skills in teacher practices... “There is a profound gap between the knowledge and skills most students learn in school and the knowledge and skills they need in typical 21st century communities and workplaces. Infuse 21st Century Tools & Skills in your Teaching Projects • There is enormous power for collaboration, idea exchange and resource sharing among groups of students and across multiple classroom projects available with these tools. • The pivotal 21st Century shift comes through emphasizing assignments and organizationaltasks that model and develop these skills & processes. See the ideas of Phillip Schlechty, Working on the Work (2002) • If we keep waiting for this sort of teaching to occur in some sort of “special” class, we will be waiting a long time. It needs to be infused throughout the curriculum, one baby step at a time.
