  6. Importance of Illustrations • An illustration is a picture or drawing in a book. • An illustration contributes to the character traits, setting, and mood of a story. • An illustration contributes to what is conveyedby words in • a story.

  7. Purpose of Illustrations: • Illustrations and words work together in several ways. Good readers visualize, or create mental pictures of what they read about. • When reading fiction texts, illustrations can help readers to visualize the people, places, and events in the story.

  8. Purpose of Illustrations: • Not only do the illustrations help readers see what the words describe, but they can also help readers understand the words themselves. • The illustrator can also help communicate a tone that matches the story.

  9. Example: • Lucy Lee was a small girl of maybe four or five, with almond-shaped eyes and wisps of almost-black hair constantly swirling around her porcelain temples. • What if you didn't know what ''almond-shaped'' eyes looked like, or the meaning of the word ''wisps''? What if you didn't understand that ''porcelain temples'' means her skin was pale and clear? The illustration can help answer those questions. Unsure of the tone of the story? Looking at this illustration, you may guess that it's kind of serious.
