  1. The Cell Theory

  2. 1665Robert Hooke • Coined the name “cells” while observing cork from a tree. • Hooke thought cork cells looked like the tiny rooms in a monastery.

  3. 1674Anton van Leeuwenhoek • Used single-lensed microscope to observe pond water. • van Leeuwenhoek observed tiny living things in the pond water as well as in the same he drank

  4. 1838 Matthias Schleiden • Determined that all plants are made of cells.

  5. 1839Theodore Schwann • Discovered all animals are made of cells.

  6. 1858Rudolf Virchow • Formulated the idea that all cells must come from other, previously existing cells.

  7. The Cell Theory The combined work of these scientists became known as the “Cell Theory.” The Cell Theory states that: • All living things are composed of cells. • Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all living things. • New cells arise only from preexisting cells.

  8. The Cell Theory • Improved microscopes revealed the presence of cells and showed their detailed structure. • Later it was determined that animal and plant cells contain organelles • Organelles are“little organs” or small bodies that have a specific structure and function within the cell

  9. How to remember the scientists and their contributions… • Hooke – looked at cork cells • Leuwenhoek – saw living things in water • Schleiden was s’ch’liding down the s’ch’lide at the park where there’s lots of plants! • Schwann – sounds like swan which is an animal! • Virchow – I got nothing. Can you make one up?
