  1. Malachi 1:1-2a Who is Israel?

  2. Malachi Background Written by Malachi in Judah Almost nothing personally is known about Malachi Written in ca. 460 BC --- about 60 years after Haggai --- two generations later

  3. Malachi Background Judah was one of 120 provinces in Persia Judah was reduced to 20 miles X 25 miles with an impoverished population of 150,000 Jerusalem still lay largely in ruins but the Temple was completed

  4. Malachi Background Judah surrounded by opposition and infiltrated by enemies The main enemies were from Edom --- the Edomites

  5. Edom vs. Judah Both Judah and Edom were defeated by Babylonia and by the Medo-Persians Judah was worse off after the Babylonians took over and then slightly better off immediately after the Medo-Persians took over --- but after Haggai’s time, Judah was impoverished once more

  6. Malachi Background After Haggai (520 BC) the Jews expected a Messiah to come --- a military or a political leader that would give Judah rule over their captors The Messiah had still not come Things were getting worse for Judah

  7. Malachi 1:1-2a The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. 2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say, “How have you loved us?”

  8. The Complaint The Jews were Dissatisfied and questioned God’s Love for them Why? They measured God’s love for them in terms of God giving them what they wanted --- what they thought they needed

  9. Malachi 1:1-2a The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. 2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say, “How have you loved us?”

  10. What They Wanted A Messiah to Grant them: Freedom Power Victory over their enemies Comfort

  11. What They Did Not Realize That God’s Love is Defined by God God determines how He manifests His Love God knows better what we need than we do

  12. What They Did Not Realize God’s Love for us is typically Spiritual and Eternal Designed to equip us to better Serve and Declare God’s Glory It is not typically measured in terms of our comfort Will never facilitate our glory

  13. God Sends Malachi Malachi 1:1 The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.

  14. At This Time… There was no Israel --- it has dissolved in 722 BC --- 160 years and 8 generations earlier

  15. This is Very Common The Prophets use the word “Israel” 511 times in the Scriptures with over 300 of these references after Israel as a nation had been dissolved

  16. The Judahites View… The Judahites would see the term “Israel” and view it to refer to those descending from Abraham They thought that Israel refers to them

  17. The Abrahamic Promise Genesis 12:1-3 Now the Lord said to Abram… I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

  18. But Who is the Heir to the Promise? Galatians 3:29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

  19. Abraham’s Seed Galatians 3:9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

  20. Abraham’s Seed Romans 9:6b-7 For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring

  21. Therefore…. Malachi is a Prophet speaking to…. All Believers --- Including You Malachi 1:1 The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.

  22. The Entire Old Testament Relates to.. Every Generation of those In Christ The promises to the “House of Israel” are to Every Generation of those In Christ

  23. The House of Israel Ezekiel 36:22-27 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God… 24 I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries…25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

  24. Take Home Message The Entire Old Testament is written for all Believers for all time The promises in the Old Testament apply to us We are the Seed of Abraham We are Israel --- the Israel of God
