  1. Order of Operations By Carl Stephen

  2. Order of Operations Parentheses Exponents Square roots Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

  3. Order of Operations In doing the four basic operations, you follow three rules: • Do what is in parentheses, if there are parentheses, exponents, and square roots. • Do multiplication and division from left to right. • Do addition and subtraction from left to right.

  4. Examples 5(3+7)-13 7(9-5)+18/(7-4) 7(2+7)-15 5(10)-13 7(4)+18/3 7(9)-15 50-13=37 28+6=34 63-15=48 8+2(9-2) 8+2(7) 8+14=22

  5. Evaluating Mathematical ExpressionswithLetters Remember: To evaluate a mathematical expression you need to substitute a particular number for a letter and then do the order of operations.

  6. Examples Evaluate when a=2 Evaluate when a=3; b=5 2(a+7)+3 8b-(a+4) 2(2+7)+3 8*5-(3+4) 2*9+3 8*5-7 18+3=21 40-7=33 Evaluate when a=4 Evaluate when b=5 6a+5 4b-1 6*4+5 4*5-1 24+5=29 20-1=19
