  3. Love Not the World “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.” (1 John 2:15-17; cf. Gen 3:1-6)

  4. Love Not the World • …but I do not love the world to begin with! • we may not love the world… • …but we may admire some of it • Admiration will eventually bring us to loving something (or someone) - ex. Judas

  5. Love Not the World • We may, at times, admire or desire “the world” • the “freedom” of those in the world • Also reflected in sexual (im)purity • 3-5% of Americans wait until marriage • 20% of religious Americans wait until marriage • Let us sanctify ourselves • 1 Thess 4:3-8; Prov 5:15-21

  6. Love Not the World • We may, at times, admire or desire “the world” • the “riches” of the world • what do I base my future career choice on? • How about time instead of money? • Wife - 1 Cor 7:5 • Children - Eph 6:4; Prov 22:6 • Church - Matt 9:37-38; 1 Tim 3:2; Titus 1:6

  7. Love Not the World • We may, at times, admire or desire “the world” • a more subtle issue: “maturity” • “I am independent now, I can do what I want!” • Luke 15 • Let us develop our own faith instead • Rom 14:22a; John 20:30-31; Gal 6:7-8

  9. Love Not the World • What to do, then? • Maybe we are not scared of the world enough… • John 14:30b; James 1:15 • Maybe we do not appreciate Christ enough… • Eccl 2:1-11; 1 John 3:4-10 • Remember, we are eternal beings! • 1 John 2:17; Col 3:1-4; Prov 4:20-27
