  4. Menes… he’s Menes… • 3,100 B.C. – united Upper and Lower Egypt • Set capital at Memphis where kingdoms met

  5. No way… a woman pharaoh!?! • 1500 B.C. – Queen Hatshepsut takes throne • 1st great female ruler in history • Wore men’s clothes, wore a beard, called “his majesty”

  6. He’s… different… isn’t he? • Akhenaten II (r. 1352 – 1336) • Husband of Nefertiti • Began reign as Amenhotep IV

  7. Religious Revolution? • Elevated Aten (minor god of sun) to dominance over all other gods • Declared monotheism

  8. Quite different… • Drawings of Akhenaten and family showed intimacy • No other pharaoh showed this • Changed image to more neutral look

  9. King Tut… doo-doo-doo • Took throne at age 9 after marrying Akhenaten’s daughter • Died at age 18 from blow to head • Still in Valley of the Kings
