  3. AIMS • This workshop aims to explore what inspires us to do the work we do, and encourage us to take active steps to stay inspired amid the challenges of modern general practice. It will explore the powerful role of modelling in GP training, and will challenge and encourage us to apply this understanding to become truly inspiring role models for the next generation of GPs

OBJECTIVES • Have identified what inspires you to do the work you do • Have developed strategies for staying inspired • Have identified an inspiring role model, and how this has influenced you • Understand the importance of good role modelling in medical education • Understand the process of role modelling • Have identified the characteristics of effective role modelling • Have developed a strategy for becoming a more effective and inspiring role model

  15. Medical students receive a great variety of messages delivered by many agents, both inside and outside the medical school, with little coherence or congruence among them. Students pick and choose traits from various models, internalizing an amalgam of values. As students advance in their studies and gain more experience, they increasingly develop their own criteria for judging the appropriateness of different values and behaviors. Shuval JT, Adler S.   16. Although role modelling is at the heart of “character formation,” medical students and junior doctors have observed that many clinical teachers are poor role models.   17. In a national survey of medical school deans on students' development of high professional standards, 82% ranked role modeling of faculty and residents as the greatest influence. Bickel J. Role models, once identified, were perceived as such for the remainder of medical school by half of the students; the other half changed their primary role models at least once.   24. STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE ROLE MODELLING • Be aware of being a role model • Demonstrate clinical competence • Protect time for teaching • Show a positive attitude for what you do • Implement a student centred approach to teaching

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE ROLE MODELLING • Facilitate reflection on clinical experiences and what has been modelled • Encourage dialogue with colleagues • Engage in pertinent staff development • Work to improve the institutional culture • Whenever possible be explicit about what you are modelling
