Why do we have a GT program? • Provide G/T students and Monitored students with appropriate acceleration, rigor, and differentiation so they will be prepared for IB, AP, and Dual-Enrollment programs • Appropriate pacing and complexity of instruction • Focus on higher level thinking skills and problem solving

9. What kind of program? • Full-collaboration model with cluster groups • What is a CLUSTER GROUP?? • 1/3 to ½ of class • Above levels in other classes

10. Collaboration Benefits for Students • Reduces student-teacher ratio • Furthers the professional development of both teachers • Serves students who have not yet been identified, yet have strengths in core academic areas

11. Collaboration Beyond Gifted Classrooms • Fortunate Problem • Sometimes 3-4 teachers with above level readers. • One grade level above • Two grade levels above • Try to assist across the grade level by providing resources and helping plan

17. Gemmill Time • I don’t refer to myself as a gifted teacher or even say gifted students. • I do not exclude anyone who is ready for a challenge based on identification NOR do I include children solely based on identification.

18. Math Differentiation • Pre-assessment on Math Strands • 1st, 2nd- across grade level pull out • 3rd – differentiating across grade level for many units

19. Third Grade • Flexible groupings allow us to expose students to the 4th grade content • This helps prepare them for the assessment at the end of the year.

20. Hanover County Criteria At the end of the 3rd grade year ALL students are given the Hanover County Criteria for the 4/5 Compacted Classroom. Students complete an exemplar (word problem) that is scored based on a rubric. Students also complete a 10 question open-ended assessment which is scored based on correct answer and explanation.

22. 4/5 Compacted First Semester- Flexibility Second Semester- Stable group receiving a separate curriculum • It is likely those students will move on to Math 5/6 BUT NOT guaranteed. • Placement in the 5/6 class is based on the Hanover County Criteria • Students will take the Math 4 SOL

23. Math 5/6 Review Math 5 and fill gaps in understanding Entire Math 6 curriculum must be mastered and students must take the Math 6 SOL.

24. What does this mean for your child? • Very few students will be receiving above level instruction. • Those who do will need to be incredible math students. • They must be able to handle a heavy work load and have strong mathematical reasoning. • They will be setting themselves up for Calculus II as a senior.

Most children will follow a pathway indicated on the chart; however, exceptional situations may present themselves as we consider each student’s capabilities, needs, and achievement.
