  3. Neurocinematics • Neurocinematic: composed of “neuro”and “cinematics”, researching how movies affect human intelligence. • Princeton University psychology professor Uri Hasson coined the term "neurocinematics" based on an fMRI study. • He concluded that certain types of films (e.g. horror, action, sci-fi) produced high activation scores in the amygdalaregion.

  4. Neurocinematics • Horror filmmakers can potentially control viewers' brains by precisely editing their films to maximize amygdalic excitement and thus "control for" buzz and success at the theater. • Inter-subject correlation analysis (ISC) was used to assess similarities in the spatiotemporal responses across viewers’ brains during movie watching.

  5. Amygdala • The amygdala is part of the limbic system, a network of interconnected brain structures traditionally associated with the processing of emotion(disgust, anger, lust, and fear).

  6. Measuring ISC During Film Viewing • Volunteers watched movies and TV episodes while their brain activity was recorded with fMRI. (B) The ISC analysis measures similarity in brain activity across viewers by comparing the response time course in each brain region from one viewer with the response time courses obtained in the same brain region from other viewers during movie watching.

  7. ISC for different films • (B) The extent of ISC evoked by • each movie segment as • measured by the percentage • of cortex that exhibited high • ISC. • (A) The ISC for four different • films.

  8. Development of neurocinematics • Providing a quantitative assessment of the impact of different styles of filmmaking on viewers’ brains. • A valuable method for the film industry to better assess its products.
