  1. Behold the Pattern Exodus 25:40

  2. We Serve A God of Patterns • The tabernacle, the Temple, and the church are all build upon a pattern • The pattern of the tabernacle (Ex. 25:8-9,40; 26:30; 27:8; Num. 8:4; Acts 7:44; Heb. 8:5; 9:24)

  3. We Serve A God of Patterns • Note three important things about the tabernacle building… 1. Attitude (emotion) had to be joined with authority (pattern) – 25:1-9; 35:20ff 2. Talent (skill) had to joined with authority (pattern) – 35:30ff 3. The building was examined to see if it matched the pattern – 39:32-43

  4. We Serve A God of Patterns • The pattern of the Temple (1 Chron. 28:11-12,8-19) • Like the building of the tabernacle, both emotion and skill had to be joined with authority (pattern) – 28:21

  5. We Serve A God of Patterns • The pattern of conversion is found in the gospel (Rom. 6:17; “form” = pattern; mold; cast; die) • The pattern for the church is found in the gospel (2 Tim. 1:13; “pattern” = outline; sketch; to delineate) • The pattern for the world is the faithful Christian (1 Tim. 1:16; Tit. 2:7)

  6. No-Pattern Brethren • Some, like Ahaz, are not content to abide by God’s pattern, but seek a worldly pattern (2 Kings 16:10) • Some ridicule the “patternist mentality” or, the “old paths mentality,” or “pattern theology,” or “legalistic patternists”

  7. No-Pattern Brethren • Brethren in the 1850’s to 1900’s that ignored the NT pattern ended up in the Christian Church and Disciples of Christ • Brethren in the 1940’s to 1960’s that ignored the NT pattern ended up in the institutional Churches of Christ • Brethren in the 1980’s that ignored the NT pattern are now leaving Churches of Christ for denominations

  8. Behold the Pattern • We serve a God of patterns! We must remain true to the NT pattern, or return to it if we have left! • The NT pattern is… • Divine (Mt. 16:18; 28:18) • Complete (2 Tim. 3:16-17; Jude 3) • Successful (Acts 2:47; 5:14; 9:31; 16:5)
