  8. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) • A VFD is a system for controlling the rotational speed of a alternating current (AC) electric motor by controlling frequency of the electrical power supplied to the motor.

  9. Variable Frequency Drive Advantages over soft start control • Variable speed on each motor will improve overall machine operation • Drive features will reduce mechanical stress • Drive safety features detect and protect the system from several types of power and motor faults. • Improved power factor and energy efficiency • Additional control possibilities

  10. Variable Speed Control: • With a soft-starter system, the motors are limited to running at base speed • With the variable speed control, it is possible to adjust the motor speeds within the speed range mandated by the motor manufacturer • The drives can be set to share the load between them

  11. Effect of Rotor Speed • High Speed operation – 10,000 fpm tip speed • Slower speed operation – 7,500 fpm tip speed

  12. Reduction of Mechanical Stress • The drive features allow programming acceleration ramps to soften the mechanic stresses involved in starting the machine • The drive ramps can be extended to a maximum of 3600 seconds. • Adjustable torque limit and current limit protect the motor from overload and minimize peak currents

  13. Safety Features • On the AC power side, the drive will detect to a missing power phase or low or high line conditions • On the motor side, the drive will protect itself from a short circuit, extreme over-current, ground fault and missing motor phase
