School of Nursing resources $2.6 million+ of external funding • Persistent nursing faculty shortage in U.S. • More than 75,000 qualified applicants to nursing programs turned away in 2011-2012 • Impacts nursing workforce in aging population Core Initiative 2: Support Nurse Faculty Problem/Challenge Resources Strategy • Establish Institute for Educators in Nursing and Health Professions • Goal: Prepare and support nursing faculty Core Initiative 1: Prepare Nurses to Teach Federal Funding • GRADUATE/POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM • 12-credit Teaching in Nursing and Health Professions Certificate • Online and classroom environments • Interprofessional — includes other practice disciplines Sample Plan of Study: State Funding (NSP II) Conclusions • The teaching certificate program is consistently preparing nursing faculty for teaching in classroom, online, and clinical environments. • Faculty development offerings are needs-based, learner-driven, creatively designed, and regularly presented. Tips for Success Clearly identify program goals and outcomes Develop and follow an ongoing evaluation plan Seek and obtain financial resources Conduct regular environmental scans and faculty needs assessments Maintain future orientation Care for and nurture all collaborative relationships Expect excellence • Outcomes as of May 2012: • 532 students have enrolled in courses • 97.8 % retention rate • 271 (51%) have completed all courses The activity that is the subject of this poster was produced with the assistance of Nurse Support Program II grants under the auspices of the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission.
