  1. IEEE Computer SocietyCloud ComputingFuture Technologies Sub-Strategy • Irena Bojanova • Chair, Cloud ComputingFuture Technologies Sub-Strategy, IEEE CS

  2. Agenda – July 11, 2012 • Introduction • Updates by Group • Conferences • Standards • Education • Publishing • Body of Knowledge • Web Portal – focus discussion • Newsletter – focus discussion • Testbed http://techsol.tnlexperts.com/2012/02/05/cloud-computing/

  3. Updates • CS Volunteers Blog – Volunteers continue approaching me: http://computersocietyvolunteerblog.computer.org/2012/06/18/introducing-the-cs-cloud-computing-special-technical-community/ • Working Area –Theresa McNeill • Provide ID to Theresa to be given access • Need to have functionality for volunteers to join

  4. Status – All • Define Scope: (1) Novel applications -best practices, case studies, common APIs; (2) Get info from CLOUD keynotes - security expert + testbeds • Cloud computing service/deployment/architecture models • Service ecosystems • High performance computing • Big data • Cloud based mobility • Determine customer needs, prioritize, get the bigger ones done first ->Chris will share results • Determine which activities will support IEEE CCI; Which are only ours

  5. Web Portal • Gabor Kecskemeti(GL) • ? • Sorel Reisman • Chris Jensen (SE) • ? (PM) • Discuss with Sorel CS to get ownership of IEEE CCI WP – Angela and Irena – NOT happening  work on WP structure – start building the prototype ready in 2 weeks – Gabor • Find out what search engine is used by Smart Grid – Theresa and Chris • Tag assets – delegated to CF and PB groups

  6. Already identified tasks • Formulate CC conceptual model and framework architecture • consider adopting NIST conceptual model, framework, and taxonomy • Bring IEEE TechNav "up to speed" on CS assets in CC • help identify correct relationship between "tags" used for CC • Create CS CC Web Portal

  7. Design considerations • Blend the best features of SmartGrid, Lifesciences and other IEEE thematic portals • Ensure to link relevant and currently available and then later the future planned IEEE content on cloud computing • The portal should not only attract new volunteers to participate in the IEEE cloud activities, but it should also enable the creation and maintenance of a vibrant and ever changing community.

  8. Current plans • As recommended the portal should be liferay based • Initial portal concept should be designed in the private parts of our new Liferay portal • Conceptual discussions should take place within the group by 25th of July • To support the conceptual portal setup, each STC group should send its expected contents and ideas on how they would expect the portal from their point of view • The initial layout and contents should be sketched up by mid August (by this time the CS support staff can help us for the public launch of the portal).

  9. Newsletter • Wes Chou (GL) • Jeff Voas • Margo McCall (SE) • Discuss options on using current IEEE-CS newsletter processes – Margo • Explore Life Sciences NL – see how to provide CC resources on Liferay • Decide on format (subscription + pushing, dynamic,…) • Dynamic development in stages – 1st stage in a month

  10. Newsletter • Wes Chou (GL) • ? • Margo McCall (SE) • Discussion about Newsletter Goals • Drive traffic to the CC web portal/s and other IEEE and IEEE-CS cloud-related content • Build a loyal and engaged community of cloud researchers and practitioners to satisfy the CC STC charter • Create a large enough subscriber base to potentially sell newsletter advertising • Steer recipients to related IEEE-CS products and services (membership, education and training, magazines, journals, conferences, books) through house ads and promos. • Encourage CS members and potential members to sign up for the newsletter. • Short term • Leverage existing CS process to send emails that link back to existing content • Short term deliverable – The content • Longer term • Closer integration with Web Portal as a “splash” page • Recommend keeping this in mind as short term plan is executed • Potential Newsletter titles: “Cloud Burst” “Cloud Spout”

  11. Conferences • PavanBalaji(GL) • Jia Zhang • Carrie Walsh (SE) • Carmen Saliba(SE) • Get the Amazon contact from CLOUD hands on activities – Jia(share with Testbed group) • Start recruiting volunteers from conferences • Tag assets – 41 CS CC conferences – Carrie and Pavan(share with Web Portal group)

  12. Technical Sponsorship Request

  13. Standards • Chuck Walrad (GL) • ? • Anne Marie Kelly (SE) • Determine CS volunteers on Cloud standards projects (12/112 and 8/134 acting members on CC standards groups) – Margo and Chuck

  14. Education • Don Shafer(GL) • Dennis Frailey • Dorian McClenahan (SE) • Determine which courses/webinars will need use of testbed – Dennis and Don • Adjust SMEs database model for CS CC STC volunteers database – Dennis and Don

  15. Body of Knowledge • Chuck Walrad (GL) • PavanBalaji • Dante David (SE) • Recruit NIST authors – Chuck and Jeff –> need to find other ways • Dynamic development in stages – 1st stag end of 2012.

  16. Publishing • Wes Chou (GL) • Liang-Jie Zhang (LJ) • Vojislav Misic • George Pallis • Lars Jentsch (SE) • Alicia Stickley (SE) • Lars has provided a great initial set of key words - Included feedback from LJ and George - Need to reduce the list. Recommend focusing on NIST definitions, adding a few others, and beginning to data mine IEEE assets. - Can follow up with sub-keywords. • Need to continue to recruit volunteers for data mining effort. Can we offer temporary accounts to Digital Library and/or Xplore?

  17. Testbed • Michael Kozuch (GL) • Rick McGeer • ? (PM) Testbed • Determine with ED what resources would be needed and for which courses • Obtain resources for CC educational activities – Rick and Mike

  18. Additional • New volunteers orientations – Irena • TCs communication plan – honor each TC chair, ask for experts – Irena • NIC funding – how to apply – Angela to talk to Kathie

  19. Questions • It is the High-Tech Wild, Wild West out there. • Although the CC marketplace is still chaotic, it is: • Exciting • Fast-growing • Full of opportunities
