ASD Parents & Carers Survey 2008. Questionnaire sent to my contacts throughout Wales and distributed to friends/ acquaintances. 41 responses from 6 local authority areas. 2 – South Wales 2 – North Wales 2 – Mid Wales 35.7% were carers for individuals over 18 64.3% under 18.

  2. Questionnaire sent to my contacts throughout Wales and distributed to friends/ acquaintances. • 41 responses from 6 local authority areas. • 2 – South Wales • 2 – North Wales • 2 – Mid Wales • 35.7% were carers for individuals over 18 • 64.3% under 18

  3. 64.3% had their assessment carried out in their local authority area. • 21.4% had to go elsewhere. • 14.3% did both. • Those who had to travel went from - to: Powys – Cardiff; Powys – Liverpool; Powys – London; Rhondda Cynon Taff – Cardiff; Carmarthenshire – London; Gwynedd - Nottingham

  4. When asked if the found the assessment/ diagnostic process easy to access, 46.2 said YES. 53.8% said NO.

  5. When asked if they has ever been refused services because of a lack of diagnosis, 61.5% said NO 30.8% said YES 7.7% said YES & NO

  6. When asked how they would rate the assessment/ diagnostic process. • Excellent – 14.3% • Very Good – 7.1% • Good – 21.4% • Fair – 21.4% • Poor – 14.3% • Very Poor – 14.3% • No Comment – 7.1%

Welsh Health Authority Questionnaire - 2008 • Do individuals requiring an assessment for ASD receive this service in your area, and if not, where do they go to receive this service? • Gwynedd – Yes, either through the Multi Agency Children with Disabilities Service or the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). • Blaenau Gwent – Yes, the local Community Learning Disabilities Team. • Torfaen - Yes, via the education system, Specialist Child & Adolescent psychiatry process, community specialist or learning disability specialist.

  8. Do individuals requiring an assessment for ASD receive this service in your area, and if not, where do they go to receive this service? • Powys – Yes, teams in North & South Powys. But this is only for children up to school leaving age. • Wrexham – Yes, North east Wales NHS Trust. • Monmouth – Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust. • Flintshire – Yes, but for under 18’s only. • Neath Port Talbot – Yes, Community paediatrician and CAMHS. • Merthyr Tydfil – No, RCT.

What assessment/ diagnostic tools are used by Health professionals in your area? • Gwynedd - Various cognitive assessments, ADOS, 3Di, S&L assessments. • Blaenau Gwent - Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (DISCO). • Torfaen - No information. • Powys - 3Di. • Wrexham - No information. • Monmouth - DISCO’ ADOS, CARS, 3Di, TA checklist. • Flintshire - ADIR, Autism Diagnostic Schedule. • Neath Port Talbot - ADOS, 3Di, DISCO. • Merthyr Tydfil - No recognised tools.

How long on average do individual have to wait from the time of their referral until they go through the assessment/ diagnosis process? • Gwynedd - Maximum 12 months. • Blaenau Gwent - No waiting time. • Torfaen - No information. • Powys - 6 months. • Wrexham - No information. • Monmouth - 23 weeks. • Flintshire - 6 months. • Neath Port Talbot - 13 months. • Merthyr Tydfil - No information.

If individual who reside in your area, and who receive services there receive their diagnosis of ASD outside the Board/ Authority area, is this diagnosis accepted by local professionals in your area? • Gwynedd - We will consider the diagnosis and possibly re-assess. • Blaenau Gwent - Yes. • Torfaen - No information. • Powys - Yes. • Wrexham - No information. • Monmouth - Yes. • Flintshire - Yes. • Neath Port Talbot - Yes. • Merthyr Tydfil - Yes.

  13. How many individuals in your area are currently waiting to go through the assessment/ diagnostic process? • Gwynedd - 15 children, No comment at all on adults. • Blaenau Gwent - 1 person. No waiting time, but 1 person waiting! • Torfaen - No information. • Powys - 56. No assessment for adults. • Wrexham - 47. • Monmouth - 112. • Flintshire - 48. • Neath Port Talbot - 24. No assessment for adults. • Merthyr Tydfil - No information.
