  1. Create Your Own Wifi Hotspot with a Laptop and Virtual Router Let’s admit it. Without Wi-fi, life pretty much sucks. Mobile data is mostly limited, and with the availability of more and more content for mobile devices, the importance of Wi-fi is highlighted even further. While 4G speeds are quite fast, mobile data still has long way to go before it can catch up with the speeds that can be achieved on a standard internet connection. And hence, Wi-fi is an essential service, and is now even a constitutional right in some European countries. However, there’s a catch – outside of our homes and universities, we mostly encounter public Wi-fi, which is either horribly slow or a paid service, and in some cases both. And we may even face the situation where a Wi-fi service is available on only one of our devices, and that device is mostly our laptop. So the question arises – how can I leverage a public Wi-fi to provide free, wireless internet to all my devices? Enter virtual routers. What is a virtual router? A virtual router, or vRouters as they are more commonly known, is a software-based routing framework that allows the host machine to perform as a typical hardware router over a local area network. To put it simply, a vRouter is a piece of software that allows you to use your laptop PC as network hotspot. Yes, you heard that right! Just like your cell phones, you can even turn your laptop into a Wi-fi hotspot. And no, you don’t need some costly software that is huge in size to accomplish this. Most virtual routers are comparatively small in size. Take mHotspot, one of the most popular virtual routers available today. mHotspot does a wonderful job, and yet its only 400 KB in size. And in this post, we are going to explain how to use mHotspot. mHotspot is a Windows based lightweight utility that can turn your simple laptop’s Wi-fi connection into a Wi-Fi hotspot. It allows you to choose the name (or SSID) of the network you wish to create and set a password for the connection.

  2. To begin, simply visit the mhotspot official download page, at this link - mHotspot Download. You can also see the number of times the utility has been downloaded (6,000,000 at the time of writing this article) and all the awards mHotspot has won (so far!). Go ahead and download for the platform you require it for. Assuming you require it for your Windows PC, click on the “Windows” link. Go ahead and install it. Also, go to the Network and sharing center on your PC (Start->Control Panel->Network and sharing center), right click on your Wi-fi connection adapter and go to Properties. Click on Sharing tab. Now clck on “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection”. Click Ok to make the changes work. Now go to Start->mHotspot. You’ll see a fairly basic GUI asking for a Hotspot name and password. Enter both by your choice and click on “Start Hotspot”. That’s it. Congratulations! Your laptops Wi-fi connection just got converted into a Wi-fi hotspot. Go ahead and start connecting all your Wi-fi enabled devices. And through the same GUI, you can even set the maximum number of devices allowed to connect (with a cap of 10), see the details of the connected devices (including IP, MAC address and name) and even use mHotspot as a repeater for any weak Wi-fi connections you might encounter in public places like hotels or airports. This is especially useful if a weak Wi-fi connection has to be shared between multiple devices – mHotspot can remove the need for a physical repeater and strengthen a weak Wi-fi signal. The only drawback with mHotspot is that it is not available for Mac – meaning that Mac users will have to look elsewhere for a product to turn their Mac laptops into Wi-fi hotspots. Connectify, MyPublicWifi, Virtual Router Manager are some of the alternatives to mHotspot but none offer neither the lightweight nature or the ease of use which comes with mHotspot. Overall, mHotSpot is a very useful freeware for those who want to create a wireless hotspot at home or office.
