Who is Portage College? • Comprehensive Community College • Serving the northeastern Alberta community for over 40 years • Corporate Centre in Lac La Biche, Alberta • 10 other campus locations across Portage’s stewardship region • Portage College offers a wide range of programming to meet the needs of a diverse range of students

  4. Who is CiTi? • Community & Industry Training Initiatives department at Portage College • Corporate division of the institution • Continuing Education, Customized Training, Workforce Training, Personal Development • Program incubator

  5. Mobile Simulator Trailer History • Incorporation of SIM technology training into the Heavy Equipment Operator program began in 2010. • Mobile 53-foot trailer • Outfitted to include heat and air-conditioning • Trailer was funded through a WED (Western Economic Diversification) Canada grant

  6. John Deere Simulators • Trailer houses 12 John Deere Simulators • Six crawler/dozers • 4 excavators • 2 motor graders

  7. Mobility • Over 5000 people have used the simulators through events and the HEO program • Trailer has travelled to a dozen communities over the past six months • Training can be taken right to students’ home communities • Pre-screening tool for potential students • College awareness

  8. Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) Program • Three 16-week programs are run per year • 14 students in each program • 40 hours minimum simulator training is mandatory • Students use the mobile SIM Trailer in between time on real equipment. The mobile trailer is parked on-site at the Heavy Equipment and Pipeline Training Centres in Boyle, Alberta

  9. Marketing • Skills Alberta/Canada • Trade Shows • Job/Career Fairs • Local parades • College social events

  10. Ever-Expanding Innovation • Updates on John Deere simulator technology continue • Movement and GPS will soon be included in simulator training • Goal is to retrofit a second trailer to house more simulators

  11. Airbrushing • Local brother duo airbrushed Mac Truck and Trailer over a 5-week period • Two different scenes on trailer: winter and summer
