  3. Early Life • March 18, 1844 – June 21, 1908 • Born in Tikhvin • 100 miles east of Saint Petersburg • Aristocratic family • Started playing the piano at age 6 • Started composing at age 10 • Pursued a naval career

  4. Life Continued • Private lessons with Mily Balakirev • Untrained musician; sought assistance from Tchaikovsky • Advised him to study • Homeschooled himself • Looked down upon by fellow nationalists • 110 works

His Works • Believed in developing a nationalistic style of classical music • Employed Russian folk song and lore • Harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic elements • Orientalism • Avoided traditional Western compositional methods • Fantasia on Serbian Themes • Ideas shifted after he began his homeschooling • Appreciated and implemented non-Russian techniques • Scheherazade
