  1. Goodwill breach article

  2. If you love online bargain shopping, then this latest news may come as a shock to you. Federal agencies and a fraud investigative unit (payment card industry) recently contacted Goodwill about a possible credit card fraud.

  3. In fact, in one of the statements published by Goodwill organization in its website states that “Goodwills across the country take the data of consumers seriously and their community well-being is our number one concern”.

  4. According to Goodwill’s Director of Public Relations, Lauren Lawson, the authorities are currently investigating this incident and as of now there’s no new information that could be shared.

  5. He further added that Goodwill Industries International has around 2,900 stores with 165 regional headquarters throughout US & Canada. In other words, Goodwill does not have any centralized point of sale system.

  6. It seems that Goodwill will join the growing list of other major retailers like Sally Beauty, Target, Michaels, Neiman Marcus, & P.F. Chang’s that have recently experienced similar breaches.

  7. When it comes to charitable organizations, Goodwill is the leading brand. It collects and sells donated household goods & clothes, and the proceeds from it are used for charitable purposes. In fact, according to Goodwill, this year it has helped over 145,000 individuals get back to work.

  8. Last year, Goodwill earned around $3.9 billion through retail sales, $647 million from industrial & service contract work, and had accumulated $618 million in form of gifts, government support and grants. As a charitable organization, Goodwill spends around 83% of its revenue on training programs & employment.

  9. Since, Goodwill is a charitable organization; it’s more distressing to see them becoming the target of a breach. However, this must not come as a surprise, as most of the cybercriminals are now targeting smaller organizations, including charitable organizations too.

  10. They very well know that such organizations do have sufficient budgets to implement a robust online security program.

  11. There is little being disclosed about how the breach was perpetrated and about the specifics of Goodwill’s security systems, however, one thing that is certain is that today’s businesses are facing a mounting threat from hackers and cybercriminals.
