Oil Crisis • Deregulate the oil industry • OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) PRICE INCREASES!!! • Had been difficult to pass on OPEC price increases to the American consumers • Oil companies could not make a profit, lacked the capital to find domestic oil wells • “windfall profits tax” to prevent oil companies from overcharging consumers

  5. Three Mile Island • A partial nuclear meltdown in Pennsylvania • Worst accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power planthistory • March 28, 1979 • Low levels of radioactive gases and radioactive iodines into the air

  6. Acid Rain • Seen as a major global environmental problem by President Carter • Mostly a problem on the eastern seaboard • The highly valued production of electricity in coal-fired utilities in the Ohio River Valley caused acid rain to fall on land in the Northeast and Canada.

Toxic Waste • Signed a $1.6 billion “superfund” bill to clean up chemical toxic waste dump sites and spills • The fund covered the costof cleaning up abandoned hazardous chemical waste dump sites and spills • Recover any costs for cleaning up from those chemical companies found as having spilled the toxic material.

Oil Crisis, Middle East in turmoil • October 1973, OPEC declared an oil embargo • Egypt and Syria had attacked Israel, and the U.S. supported Israel • OPEC decided to “punish” the United States until March 1974 • By January 18, 1974, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had negotiated an Israeli troop withdrawal from parts of the Sinai. The promise of a negotiated settlement between Israel and Syria was sufficient to convince Arab oil producers to lift the embargo in March 1974

Fall of South Vietnam, 1975 • The introduction of Vietnamization under Nixon. • January 1, 1975 People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) began their movement toward Saigon • April began rocket launching • By April 30th, South Vietnam was wholly under N. Vietnam control, workers in the US Embassy fled • North Vietnamese tanks smashed down the gates at the Presidential Palace to accept the surrender of General Minh • Saigon = Ho Chi Minh City

The Afghanistan Invasion • The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979 to ensure that a pro-Soviet regime would be in power • In response to the invasion, the United States imposed a grain embargo on the Soviets. • It also withdrew from the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. • More importantly, the Soviet invasion resulted in increased defense spending in the United States.

  13. Iranian Hostage Crisis • A diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States • 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days. • From November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981 • a group of Islamist students and militants supporting the Iranian Revolution took over the American Embassy in Tehran
