  1. Dealing With Your Pets and Tornadoes A violent and rapid circulation of columns of air accompanied by cumulonimbus clouds destroying everything in its path is known as a tornado. Tornadoes are known to cause massive destructions to humanity and animal life as well. If you are a pet parent and happen to reside in a tornado-prone area, it is essential to stay prepared for these ghastly swirlers as and when they arrive. As pet parents it is important to keep yourself safe as well as take preventative measures to keep your furry pal safe too. Below are some valuable tips you can take note of that will help you. (a) Before a tornado arrives. (b) During a tornado attack and. (c) After the tornado has passed. What to Do Before a Tornado Strikes? Preparing well before a tornado attack can go a long way in saving yours as well as your pet’s life. Here’s how you can prepare yourself before a tornado gets to you. Create a disaster kit for your pet. The disaster kit should contain items such as i) a week of pet food ii) sufficient water iii) bowls for water and food iv) towels and toys v) your pet’s vaccination records vi) first-aid kit vii) sanitation items and viii) other essentials that you deem necessary. Locate a highly safe location in the vicinity large enough to hold your family and pets.  

  2. Gather your family and pets and practice with them on how you would get them all to the safe location. Ensure all your pets have ID’s with their names and your contact information inscribed on them. This will help locate them in case they go missing. The commands “come” and “go” should be taught to your pal. This may come to use. Know all the hiding places of your pet so that you can detect him easily and quickly as and when the storm arrives.     What to Do During a Tornado Strike? Remember to follow these basic tips to help protect your pet during a tornado strike. Do not leave your pet tied up outside. If your pet happens to stay outdoors, get him in well before the tornado attack. If evacuation is possible, evacuate the area with your pets to a safe zone. Put your pet in crates or carriers and place it under a sturdy piece of furniture. This will prevent the strong wind from harming or injuring your furry buddy. If you notice your pet getting frightened, draw closer to him and calm him down.      What to Do After a Tornado Strike? The storm’s gone and you and your buddy are safe now. Well, not really… There are still some safety tips to keep in mind. Here’s what needs to be done after a tornado strike.

  3. Once the storm has passed by completely, only then should you look for an exit. After the storm, keep your pets on a leash or in a carrier for at least a couple of hours. This will help them readjust to the situation. Ensure that your pet is no way close to the tornado damaged areas. In case you cannot find your pet, contact your local animal control office.     Now that you are aware of these tips, what are you waiting for? Go share them with all the pet parents you know. And who knows, you could help save a life!
