Prayer O God, we pray for all those in our worldwho are suffering from injustice:For those who are discriminated againstbecause of their race, color or religion;For those imprisonedfor working for the relief of oppression;For those who are houndedfor speaking the inconvenient truth;For those tempted to violenceas a cry against overwhelming hardship;For those deprived of reasonable health and education;For those suffering from hunger and famine;For those too weak to help themselvesand who have no one else to help them;For the unemployed who cry outfor work but do not find it.We pray for anyone of our acquaintancewho is personally affected by injustice.Forgive us, Lord, if we unwittingly share in the conditionsor in a system that perpetuates injustice.Show us how we can serve your childrenand make your love practical by washing their feet. -mother teresa

  3. Gender • definition: one class of such a set (most common is feminine and masculine) • Most people find it hard to believe that gender is constantly created and re-created out of human interaction, out of social life, and is the texture and order of that social life.

Gender and social construction • Gender constructions starts when you are born- based on your sex, you are named and dressed in different clothes, colors, etc. • Parenting is gendered- there are different expectations for mothers and for fathers • These different processes constitute the social construction of gender

  6. Gender as a social institution • Gender is one of the major ways that human beings organize their lives • One way of choosing people for the difference tasks of society is on the basis of their gender, race, and age

Difference between gender and sex • Sex- biological characteristics • Gender- Perceived characteristics that society places, social characteristics that deal with whether you are feminine or masculine (ex. Women must have long hair, wear skirts/dresses; men must short hair, wear long shorts/pants)

  8. Sexism • Sexism: 1.attitudesorbehaviorbasedon traditional stereotypes ofsexual roles. • 2. discriminationordevaluationbasedona person’s sex, as in restricted job opportunities; especially, suchdiscriminationdirectedagainstwomen.
