  1. Properties of Water Earth’s Waters Ch1.2 Pages 23-29

  2. Unique Structure • H2O – Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen • Polar Moleculebecause it has a charge • Positive Hydrogen attracts negative Oxygen, sticking together.

  3. Surface Tension • Polar nature of water molecules attracts them to one another • Molecules pull on each other from all sides • Creates Surface Tension, which gives raindrops their round shape.

  4. Capillary Action • Water can climb up walls • Many materials attract water, pulling it upwards • The attraction between water and material is called Capillary Action.

  5. Universal Solvent • Solution: mixture when one substance dissolves another • The substance that does the dissolving is called the Solvent • Polar nature allows water to pull other polar substances apart.

  6. Special Solid • Most solids are formed when molecules contract and move closer together • Water expands into grid-like crystal structure instead • Solid form is less dense than liquid form.

  7. Specific Heat • Specific Heatis the amount of energy needed to increase temperature of a substance by 1⁰C • Water requires unusually high energy to increase temperature.

  8. What to Work On • Read Chapter 1.2, Properties of Water • Pages 23-29 • Answer Section 1.2 Review questions • Questions 1-4 on page 29 DUEFriday, 1/6
